Did this lil test clip last night - what do you guys think about this one? Do y'all still think it sounds hollow/like it was recorded in a tiny box? Prosonic was running in 30 watt class A tube rec mode http://www.netmusicians.org/?section=id&value=9067 |

Sounds good, but I do get that midsy box sound. Now: 1. I am on laptop speakers, so really it can be taken with a grain of salt. 2. I like the toanes. What mics are you using? Have you only used the SM57 in the iso box or have you experimented with other ones. |

Thanks for listening man. I intentionally dialed in lots of bass and mids and pulled the treble way back for this clip to try to get close to the tone of the original but I might have killed a bit too much treb. Unfortunately all I have for mics is a pair of SM57's

I honestly don't think that the SM57 is going to be a problem here. If i had to guess, i would say that either the boxiness is coming from the jet city speaker itself, or from the interior dimensions of the iso cab being incorrectly drawn up and causing odd EQ/reflection problems, as alluded to by the other doods here earlier. Do you have another 12" speaker you could stick in there to test with? A more "known quantity", like a celestion or something? Solely as a test, you could also record one track with the door closed, and then immediately after, one with the door open, and see how different the sound is. I understand that you didn't buy an iso cab to play it with the door open, but just for the sake of scientific experimentation, i would like to hear the results of running it with the door open.

Did you listen to this clip? I didn't want to say it outright but this clip was actually recorded with the ISO trapdoor open, and yes it makes a huge difference for the better (unfortunately). |

Ah, i did listen, but i wasn't sure how much of the difference was just due to changing the amp and settings. I would suggest that perhaps the Jet City speaker might be accentuating the qualities of the enclosed space, rather than minimizing them in a more desirable fashion. If you have a single 12" that can handle the output of your amps, you might consider trying that out in there, just for further testing? I would think that a greenback or H30 might be interesting options, though at too low a power handling for the D60 and Supersonic. Maybe the higher wattage WGS versions? Or even just try slapping a V30 in there for caparison, if you happen to have one spare? I feel like there should be a way to make it work well enough, but it looks like you might have to do some legwork to get there.

Yes I have a 120 watt Eminence Legend I've been using for years in my normal 1x12 cab and I've thought about slapping it in the ISO just because I'm familiar with recording that speaker, but I actually like the tone of the Jet City speaker - doesn't seem too far off from the other Eminence speakers I use regularly. I'm gonna give the stock speaker more time to break-in and do a bit more experimenting with my mic before I start swapping, because the fact that the difference in sound is so huge just from having the door open or closed doesn't give me much hope  I wish I would have saved the "closed door" tracks for this project so you guys could hear. I understand that the comb filtering/boxiness is a common symptom of most (or all) ISO cabs out there, and some guys mentioned that there are ways to lessen it with EQ....hopefully someone could expand on that for me. |

I hear no tiny box quality in it... I am hearing some phaseyness though. That aside... the tone very abstractly reminds me of the tone on Opeth's Deliverance album... can't say why though. Maybe because it's so midrangey and crunchy? |

I didn't manage to comment your last clip, but I do still hear it. It's a boxiness that kind of also resembles a phase issue, to my ears. I postulate that perhaps what's going here is soundwaves are bouncing off the walls in that box and back into the mic along with soundwaves that went straight to the mic's diaphragm, causing a very specific constant phase issue. Perhaps the problem might be solved then, if you could increase the dampening along the interior walls of that box. Cool riffs though.

Thanks bud. This clip definitely sounds more "in your face" than the ones I did with the trapdoor closed. I suspect that the boxiness in this particular clip is more from the way I had the amp dialed than the cab itself, but idk. I'm really starting to feel a bit disappointed in this cab. I pretty much bought it solely for the purpose of recording my metal band's official demo but it looks like unless I really stumble upon some new tricks all it will really be good for is "supplemental" tones....i.e. it might possibly be cool to add some iso tracks in to thicken up my "traditionally" mic'd guitar tracks. You guys think that might work well? I mean, the build quality of the cab seems great, it looks awesome, and it definitely shears off TONS of volume, but if I have to record it with the trap door open to get tones that will stand on their on, it pretty much defeats the purpose I probably shouldn't be mentioning this but Doug from Jet City told me they are working on a "Pro" version of the Jetstream cab which will have bigger dimensions all the way around, and will include 2 mic connections inside, as well as featuring the new Eminence speaker with the built-in attenuator. That one seems like it might actually be WIN. We shall see....seems like he realized the stock Jetstream cab just doesn't quite cut it..... |

I was looking at those but I think I might wait for that pro  Two mic stands is win, but hopefully they will make an attentuatorless version ... or make it bypassable or whatevs. |

Yeah dude definitely wait on that one. As for the attenuator it's gonna be one of the new Emi FDM speakers that have the output adjustment on the back of the speaker magnet, so you will be able to adjust it to taste, or just leave it off.
Indeed, and that is super fucking cool of him.  I'll definitely be giving you guys the scoop on it when I get my hands on one....probably won't be any time soon though I'm sure. |
