First lil test with the Seymour Duncan Mick Thompson EMTY Blackout pickup.....what do you guys think?

I'm fucking loving this pickup much more than the EMG 81 it replaced :nods:

Sounds cool... nice old school death metal sort of sound...

Warm and fuzzy. :unstrung: My limited personal experience with the Blackouts is that they're much less harsh than EMG 81s; a fuller sounding (better sounding) pickup.

That was awesome. I loved the tone.

Were you using any plugins?

Hell yeah thanks guys :D

It sounds a lot fuller and warmer in the room too - its crazy because to me they dont even sound like active pickups, at least not what I'm used to hearing with EMG's.

For plugins I was using Kefir to load Catharsis impulses, and ampeg SVX for the bass. Little bit of TC M30 reverb and Voxengo Overtone EQ on the lead riff.

This. My metalhead friend put them in his Shred-X Explorer and it was an immediate and massive improvement in his tone from the stock pickups. Part of me wants to hear the Blackouts in a less gainy setting (other than totally pristine metalcleans) to get a better feel for 'em, how they compare to passives otherwise. They seem a better pickup than 81s all around.

Anyone done a side-by-side with them and 85s? That might be a better comparison, because they :eekass: on 81s.

I haven't done a side by side comparison but I used the 85 for years in my main axe (my Cali) and always thought it stomped the 81 for the stuff I do. It was by far my favorite active pickup but I think I like this EMTY even better - it has a bit less bass than the 85 but still plenty and it stays uber tight.

My roommate got the AMT V1 Vox preamp pedal and I've been wanting to do a clip with it - maybe I'll do one with the AMT and the EMTY pickup - that would be a real mindfuck

I like that tone a lot. Very thick and meaty... the polar opposite of the tones I usually go for/end up with.

I get thick tones sometimes, yes, but most of my tones are more in the "aural sodomy" area.

You know, high mids, treble, super tight, and twangy. That's the noise I want my guitar to make, hence having a main guitar with a maple body, maple neck, and maple fretboard.

I wasn't insulting myself, more like comparing Tussy Hole to myself, and complimenting him in the process.

Dont you mean oral sodomy? :cop:

I think of MF's toans as having a low mid as fat as my ass, with some gnashing high mids also.
