 Made a simple drum recording
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... D=10261030Just threw up my AT2020s, put an SM57 over the snare (a bit further off than usual), and ran a line from the Yamaha drum brain for the kick. So just four channels. One take... a little editing but still lots of warts to be heard. Some parallel compress added. Dig the tight snare tuning? Still the brass Pearl Sensitone. I cranked it after listening to Hemdale and being all, 'grind needs a tight snare!' It has since loosened itself (it was originally the snare that goes 'PING', easily the best snare in the hospital) into a sound that pleases me muchly. This song I already posted about when it had SD2 drums. Since then I duplicated the guitars and replaced the 5150 sim with a Recto one, so this like a raping guitar sandwich of both virtual maps. And I added some midi bass from Reason...

How high up the 2020s? Sounds pretty derned swell for so few microphones. I'd like more tom action all up innit, but it still sounds pretty good as is. Also, i like the high tuned snarecrack. It is funny, because you are tuning higher, and i have been tuning lower lately.

Re: Made a simple drum recording
The overheads are about six feet up. Just about touching the ceiling actually, since it's all sitting on top of my dumb home made drum riser. I'm definitely missing the toms also. How low is that snare mister Chris? Midrange or is wumpytime?

Re: Made a simple drum recording
I had it just above Wumptown for a couple weeks, but everytime i sit down to play i end up turning all the lugs about a quarter turn (practically before i notice i am doing it) so it has been steadily creeping up since then. Basically, my snare is not really a great one. It has one kind of "sweetspot" range, and recently i have decided that my tuning had drifted out of it. So i went for a rejigger and some recon into other tuning ideas experimentations. I know what i WANT it to sound like, but i think it will cost me a new snare to get there. So i am basically looking then for an interim tuning solution with Oldy McSteel for the now times. As for your recoarding, six feet from the floor? Or six feet above the cymbals?

Re: Made a simple drum recording
Yeah some snares seem to be really picky about the tuning range I suppose. Six from the floor of the drum riser... the room itself is only seven feet high. If it sounds any bigger it's because of the reverb, which I have since removed and updated the download.

Nah, actually, i figured they were about there. I recognized certain elements from my most recent barrage of room/overhead experiments.

Also reverb on drums is funny. It seems like it might be a good idea, and when i am mixing i will put some on and be like "FUCKYEAH, that sounds huge and awesome! " ...and then a few hours later i will go back and listen to the mix and be like "holyfuck. why with the reverb? "

Re: Made a simple drum recording
I agree re: the toms. My experiments have led me to unfortunately conclude metal kinda needs close tom mics no matter the OH configuration. Even if the toms sound awesome and full with a four-mic setup solo-ed, all their body gets eaten up. The sonic reality of dense mixes with a lot going on in the lows and low mids is unavoidable.

Moar Tom would be good, yes. Sounds great though, I love that snare tone. Sort of reminds me of what I try to get out of my piccolo, only better. This makes me want to try to record drums in my room.. There's like.. 20 or so foot ceilings down there.
