http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... D=10337310 Used the 'Recorderman' overheads arrangement, plus my Avantone kick mic. Parallel compress, some EQ on the kick, that's it. The Recorderman I suppose would be my goto for simple drums from now on. It captures a goodly amount of non-cymbal content. It sounds really strange panned wide though. I ended up panning each mic only 40%. It sounds fine with both mics in the centre, but I'm just not into that! Also a little weird having a mic less than a foot from my head but whatevs... On a side note, this band writes songs really quickly.

Will those be guitars? Or are they going to stay awesome? Drums sound good. If you want a wider pan from them, definitely look into the Glyn Johns style. It is actually quite similar to Recorderman in setup, just with the mics pulled out a bit further and set at a slightly different angle to each other. I do find that it responds better to wider pans though. Though it definitely depends on how your kit is arranged. But yeah, if i didn't love my close tom mics so much, all i would need were three or four: GJ overheads, kick, maybe snare. I think i am weaning myself away from the bottomsnare mic too. In a setup as minimal as mine for available channels, it just doesn't seem an even trade to give stereo cymbals for the very tiny level of undersnare mic i tend yo use in a mix. An aside: my fucking keyboard batteries must be dying again. Typing is getting bizarre and tedious.

Also, what kind of kick EQ do you find yourself running with that microphone? Does it need a lot, or just smaller tweaks?

The kick mic already has a very treated sound, with the thump and the click going on. Nevertheless this is frickin' deathgrind, so I gave it a narrow peak at 4K, about 5 db. I also dumped just a wee bit of low mids and increased the lowness a little. The guitars will be real ones eventually... In this band we just write tunes in Guitar Pro and send them around, if everyone likes the track they learn it and I record a rough drum track to it. The last simple drums recording was a track of my own creation (hence I recorded real guitars), this one is the bassist's so I exported midi guitar into Reason.
