Sometimes, kids are just born ugly. (first mix removed  updated one here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... D=10489062 )Little overboard maybe on the low end, and the bassline didn't sound out of key when i recorded it, but there is one chord that sounds that way to me now every time it comes up. The toms are taking up probably too much space. I wanted them to boom, i think they boomed their pants. See that, full circle to the ugly child. |

Snare needs more mids and volume, high hat needs less uber-highs, toms sound pretty epic, actually. Double track the riff and you've got yourself a cool mix. |

What, you don't like the epic sound of a solid state Crate practice amp?  Also, yeah, i think i forgot to remove an EQ i was experimenting with on the drum buss. That is where the Uber Hats are coming from.

The toms, unfortunately, are what is blocking out the snare. That and the reverb on it, i don't think fits quite. It makes it sound darker than it should.Also the guitars are doubletracked. But it is weird, while i like the way this guitar(mid seventies SG) sounds by itself, it is kind of ass in the mix. I have run into that before. I am not a big fan of fucking with guitars too much with EQ, except for odd effect, so i will probably just do it with the tele some other time. Because that basically just needs a little high passing and done. |

If you were to pan the guitars not-mono, you'd have better luck with the snare.  I imagine the mono-ness of the whole thing is eating the snare alive. |

The only things down the middle of this mix are the kick, the snare, and one of the fuzz guitars. I think maybe i played the doubles too close or something. Because, i hear what you are saying, but all of the guitars are panned all over the place. There are like four tracks of clean and four tracks of fuzz. Two tracks of each are panned hard left and right, and two are panned at something like 50-60% left and right. Then there is just one fuzz right up the middle. Frankly, there are way more guitars on here than i would prefer. Anyhow, here is another mix, with the toms pulled back a little, and the sizzle Eq removed: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... D=10489062 The hats are still loud, but that is more from the snare mic bleed now, because i bumped the limiter on there a bit. Also, i messed with the guitars a little. I don't actually know if this is even a better mix. I think i have kind of toasted my ears at this point.

I'd probably lose the center guitar track altogether... once it leaves it sounds much more "natural". I think I'd also bring up the level of the drums as a whole... they're pretty buried. |

And the bass guitar is missing. Also that mix doesn't have the centered fuzz on it. I will do one more tonight. Then i am not going to touch this one again until at least tomorrow. |

Oh, and i will have to look at it tomorrow with fresh eyes because that hi-hat bleed is fucking brutal on this. I almost think i must have some sort of compressor doubled or something because this is the exact same mic setup i have been using for the last few things, and the hat bleed has been nowhere close to this bad until this one. Fucking ugly kids.

Yeah, the "second one" is now officially the sixth one. I just updated that file, rather than having like six equally shit versions up at once. I left the first one up though, for reference. This last one is more closely related to that one than the other four, with the bigger toms and whatnot. |

You can skip over the first one, and just go straight to the last one(i.e. the second one in the OP). I am probably going to remove the first one. I am not really happy with the last one(overdone toms moastly, and lost the attack of them innit), but it is good enough for something as simple as this halfsong.

I dig this a bunch. The drums are really far back in the mix though... they need to be more present. Not necessarily all that much louder, the snare just needs more cut. The mix is a bit boomy but in kind of a cool way. I like the guitar tones, they fit the song real well. |
