So, I got ahold of some mics last night.
A SM58, a SM57 and a Nady DM80.
This is me recording some acoustic and vocals after just waking up and smoking some of that sweet leaf.
It's quite pitchy..
But it was the first take and I thought it turned out decently enough.
:idk:

This is the DM80 and Line 6 Gearport preamp sim shit, "American Classic" is the model name.

Reminds me of Nirvana?

I think some sort of compression is totally needed for the voice...

It IS Nirvana.

And yus, compression is important for these kinds of vocals.

You can get really, totally, completely stupid with compression on vocals and no one will ever call you on it if you do it right. If The Beatles could do it, you can too. I will unashamedly compress them on the way in (come to think of it, I always hit the vocal on the way in), compress them again in the mix and then limit the vocal bus. You can beat on a vocal at 20:1 or with a mastering limiter or whatever and still be golden with settings that would turn anything else to :eekass: .

American Classic should be the API model, IIRC. I wonder if you can push that or the Neve one a bit hard and get some cool grit out of it?
