ok i think i found the problem. the clean wavs you gave me were stereo. when I reamped, i never pushed the reaper left/right button to one side so it was using both signals and putting it in the reamp box. i recorded with button pushed to the right and now the extra midrange sound is much less.

1 mic. SM57 about a foot back aimed in between the edge of the cone and the dust cap.
