Poast something old.

Here's where I was... oh fuck, ten years ago now  :http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13184331/blinded.mp3

Re-finding this almost makes me want a Soloist and a Valvestate. Boss DR-660, Alesis QS6 and an Apple G3. I might have listened to a lot of Swedish bands then.

This is about as far back as it goes for what I still have... I tend to scrap old shit. Almost 2 years old I think?

I've got some cassette shit I dug up and sent back into the computer from when I was sixteen or seventeen with my first band. We liked Tool and drugs. Now I'm being kind to myself with the selection I chose because the majority of the recordings are terribly awkward nu metal covers, whereas this is us jamming it out, stoned, which I suppose is the one thing we did fairly well. With the black lights and lava lamps, of course.

Here's the first thing I did when I started doing recordings on the computer:

Probably eighteen at that point... :red:

Another one I found; there was a ladysinger on this. This one even got gigged a few times: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13184331/Driven%20Beyond%20Hell%20demo.mp3 alas I can't find a vocalated version. I had a DR-770 for drums at that point. Sounds like there's even a bass on there! Can't place the amp; my guess is Mark IV?

Post Re: Where you usedta is? Word.
A very random smattering of early failures:

1. 2002, January 3rd, after the final dissolution of my last proper band, i decided to attempt to record as a one man band, but i was at the time totally against planning anything too much, so i decided to do it without writing any songs first. Once long ago i poasted an extended drum&guitar clusterfuck from this era, this one is considerably less clusterfucky than that was:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... D=11357441

Guitar was probably my Jackson JJ1, amp was definitely a borrowed JCM900 into a Crate 4x12 with the worst speakers ever(i still use one of them with my practice amp). Drums were two mic'd probably dynamic radioshack above, and radioshack PZM in the kick. Everything recorded into ye olde Tascam 414MKII. IIRC, i ripped the drums into the computer and then re-ripped them as one track BACK into the fourtrack, then put the two guitars and bass in the remaining slots.

Also, as one can fairly easily tell on hearing it, back then in the old days when i mixed it into digital form on the computer, i had a pirated copy of Waves Ultramaximizer all up in this. [The waveform for this is completely blacked solid on the right channel :huzzah: :red: ]

2. 1998, don't know what day/month, the original was destroyed in a HDD crash, this digital copy is newer. This was one of my first attempts(and failures - a recurring theme, no?) at making electronic sounds. At the time i was obsessed with dance music that could not be danced to. Which is like, obviously a genius concept... and worked as well as any thinking person would have assumed from the very beginning. :red:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... D=11357446

I don't even remember what the noises were made by, i was really into misusing electrosound stuff back then though, so it was probably something that was not meant to be a synth at all. :dukes:

3. 1995. This is one of the oldest things that i recorded that i still have. It was another conceptual thing(i was sooo into conceptual things in my yout) but i won't even try to explain what i meant to accomplish with it, because it didn't work(surprise). I recorded a lot in this style, reverby guitars sort of playing off each other and skirting chaos(when they didn't drop into it). I didn't know enough about too many things for it to have worked right, and now that i know enough to do it right, i think it is stupid, so i won't.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... D=11357444

This was all recorded via my Charvette(first guitar) into my Crate G-212(first amp) into my Tascam 414MkII(first recorder), late at night while the rest of my family tried to sleep. One of the recordings actually has my dad, pissed as hell hissing something about having to work in the morning and would i PLEASE shut the fuck up with the guitar. :red: I am indeed sorry, dad.

Snaxo, that sounds so very much like you, the guitar sound, while playing a bit different style, has a very familiar snaxo flavour to it. The other one has a fairly unsubtle sisters of mercy nod. Both exhibit impeccable snaxo sonic build quality, age of recordings mostly only made apparent via stylistic differences and now-relatively-out-of-date fauxdrums tech. :isay:

Metalfana1c, your rhythm bits are properly wunderbahr. Right hand is beast mode. :huzzah:

Geoffstrung, how old are you now? 24-ish? The jam is long but has some interesting bits to it for sure. Seems like a nice snare too? You are what, guitarring on this? Second one is reasonably gnerly.

I am agreeing with your observations on other forumites. :isay:

I'm going on twenty six now, believe it or not. I was one of the guitarists in the jam recording...

Despite your bad vibes on them I'm liking your recordings there Mr. Chris. I listened to them in reverse order. Oldest one gets a passing grade as something to chill to. Second has a nice shuffle to it, I can imagine Thom Yorke's voice going with it. Newest one is some fine noise.

I only wish that i hadn't been so into making conceptual rules about how something had to be written or played back then. I hardly even heard what i was making(and: the problems with it) when i was making it, because i was only concerned with what the IDEA of it was. That is just a dumb way to make sounds. And it is a bad habit that in many ways i retain to this day.

The way i hear what i record, and the way anyone else is going to, are just two very different things. And only removed from the thing by months and years, do i find that i can hear the fucked up things and bad choices. I would love to accelerate that process of hearing/fixing to something closer to real time for myself. My hearing just works so much better for other people's sounds than for my own. :poop:

I'd have to go to my Soundclick for this.

This one had it's name stolen for another project, but after listening to this I am bringing it back under a new name. A little bit sped up of course ....

And this is one is just me fucking around with a slide, awfully out of tune ...
