Post Decided to go back a pile of years in recording methodology.
Two mics for drums. MXL2001 above, Radioshack PZM inda kick.

Oh. Then i turned the mic pres all of the way up.

There must be some sort of limiter in the Alesis, because this isn't straight up digital distortion. Maybe straight up opamp distortion though(that could be what is limiting things also). Sucks for fast stuff, but it is, i am sad to say, one of my favorite sounds, ever, for slow drum beats. :red:

As i was hitting the record button, you can hear me muttering to myself as to what i expected the resultant wav files to look like.

There is like, no extra compression on this, just a limiter to make sure nothing spiked above 0dB on mixdown. Then i looped the one section of slowbeat a little.

This one is silly, but i do think that i am going to return to this much simpler drum tracking method.

I also think i am going to start paying a lot less attention to whether or not the channels are visually clipping. I actually prefer the sound of a little dirt.

Allllllso, i think i am done using the CAD kick drum mic for that porpoise for a while anyhow. The Ratshack PZM gives a much more focused, crisp kick sound without any EQ. I may finally do the phantom power mods for the thing though, as it would be very nice to not need to feed the thing AA batteries all the fucking time. The mod is kind of fiddly though, i have definitely been putting it off. :red:

Indeed, when I used the CAD kick mic some time ago it seriously lacked definition. Softest kick mic evarrr.

That is a wonderfully rotten sound. There was once a time when tube distortion was not desirable. Sounds is just sounds in the end... :idk:

Yarr, the CAD has monetary cheapness on its side, and it totally provides low end up that wazoo. But, low end up the wazoo, is actually too much low end.

I think it might be better suited to floortom use or bass cabs actually. An experiment for some future time.

This would be totally awesome with an overly political white guy yellrapping over it with fuzzed out bass and funky guitars.

What is it about audible, often severe distortion, that's so appealing? The funny part being you don't even actually here it in full mixes either much of the time, but it's there. It's like compression but better. I think this is cool as hell, but you know me and dirt. :huzzah:

I love this sound for drums. I also get the feeling that the drums would still sound gloarious without all the distortion. Much prefer this raw drum sound to really processed tight sounds.
