Re: Vesication full length progress thread
Well in terms of progress all rhythm instruments are done. We just need leads and vocals. http://soundcloud.com/geoffhodsman/foss ... k-hm-2-mix <There's a hole in the middle where I only used the guitar's miced signal to lead into the next section, so that lead in guitar is muted There's the HM-2 clone only mix of one of the songs, I think I mentioned I'd post something like this. Also I flipped the phase on the snare mic and it seems a bit fatter? I guess I should be flipping the phase on the snare on all the songs then.

Re: Vesication full length progress thread
The guitar sound is fucking righteous, IMHO.
The snare actually sounds thinner to me than i remember it sounding the last go around. This may however be an inaccurate memory on my part. Or it could also be more related to the bigger swath of EQ that the lava guitars are taking up, letting less snare through.
In general there is a bit of compressor-type swashiness that i pick up heres and theres. Possibly cymbals/overheads, or possibly more likely the kick? Remind me, did you mic this kick action, or trigger it?

Re: Vesication full length progress thread
Kick was a trigger... I think this compressor you're hearing is the room mic. I recently turned the room mic way up because I thought the drums needed more 'glue', and well, it's compressed to fuck!

Re: Vesication full length progress thread
I can hear the room mic squash thing too- it works though, I think. (And if you're not digging it yourself, Mr. Geoff, you can always tamper with the attack/release settings.) That guitar tone is disgustingly violent. Right side guitar seems louder to me than the left? Might just be frequencies though, 'cause it sounds like two distinct tones, with the brighter one being on the right. Ugly HM-2 mids abound.

Re: Vesication full length progress thread
BTW, random question: is there any acoustic kick drum happening here at all in the OHs/room, or did you just say "fuckit, I'm in a death metal band" and trigger it off a pad? Just curious.

Re: Vesication full length progress thread
Yeah there is plenty of kick in the room and a bit in the OHs. But it's insignificant in the mix, what with the levels of the drum components (close mics way way louder) and the thickness of the guitars.

http://soundcloud.com/geoffhodsman/born ... wo-dicks-1We're doing vocals, so that means that songs that don't have lead guitar are done

Re: Vesication full length progress thread
http://www.mediafire.com/download/eazqw ... cation.rarSo it's donnnne. Now, as if I haven't been doing so all this time, the thing must be nitpicked. If you guys might listen and tell me if you feel any certain things needs a fixin', please say... At present it has my 'mastering job' on it. Should I pay a pro to do it? Or at least someone I know who is better than me at it?

Re: Vesication full length progress thread
DLing now as well and will do the same. 3:30 AM is probably not the time to blast it on the speaks. Re: Masturing, if you could poast an unmastered mix of... Just a track, I think, would do, assuming you did the same across all to A/B with, that might give us a little better idea to see if there's something you're doing that is not beneficient. Mastering is a black art, truly. There's so many ways to go about it, too, and it is really dependent on the mix. Some stuff is really heavy-handed, some stuff is the mixes are the masters; the mastering engineer just sets up the version for duplication. Across many genres. And, of course, everything in between. I like to leave a good bit of headroom as of late and not mix into anything on ye olde 2-buss. But I don't know. BTW, if you're up for a techie read, Bob Katz's Mastering Audio- The Art And The Science. This is hardcore stuff; readable and not completely stultifying, if dense. I may have it floating around somewhere if you have the time...

Re: Vesication full length progress thread
OH MY GOD IT'S SO JUICY Goddamn, the guitars and bass turned out really heavy. I feel like though, maybe the mix is a little busy/thick or something? Like, there are some frequencies from different things stepping on each other a little bit (however, I am not perceptive enough to name off bandwidths or anything cool like that). Also, I think the snare could do with being a little louder, but otherwise I like where the levels are at.

Re: Vesication full length progress thread
Yes I believe in the low end there is probably a bit of overlap. I think it contributes to the 'unreasonably thick feel' so I am iffy about changing it, but it's worth a try maybe? The snare I also would like louder, but unfortunately the amount of bleed the Sm57 lets in is not making that very easy. Snaxie, I shall provide such a track tomorrow. Here is a rough outline of what might become the album cover: We're calling it 'Prepare Uranus' Those Dickships are invading Uranus. It is defended by Turdships. They fire photon corn kernels.
