Doing pre-pro funsies on an a full length I am very excited to record. My buddies have a band called Follies & Vices that are like an indieemo thing with a hiphop inspired vocalist. The result is kind of a more rock-y Why? sort of sound. Getting pretty righteous drum sounds for such a tiny room. Also, I am now getting my recordings quite loud now, this one is backed off quite a bit and could be significantly louder.

Still not 100% happy but I think this is a huge improvement on my normal results. Used a weird "room" mic that was near the floor next to the kick drum and facing away-ish from the hi-hat and with plenty of snare and rack tom action in it. Smashed the balls out of that, used a Yamaha SPX990 "bright hall" verb on there and mixed it in with the rest of the mics to taste.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
I do like the 2nd mix better. I am also a fan of the guitars-louder-louder-than-all-of-the-things vibe.
Will there be a bass at some point?
I am intrigued by the concept of an indieemo thing with hip-hop inspired vox. I don't even know how that might work.
There will be bass, as well as a second guitar for a lot of stuff. We were just hanging out at the house so we decided to cut a barebones demo for the sake of me playing production stuff in the room.
I am going to do things a little different next time around, I am gonna use the mic that's on guitar here (my new mk-219) for the room mic and throw in some tom mics. Also, these hi-hats will be swapped for my Paragons. They are much better sounding when open.
Vocalist is my buddy, Tanner, who was solely a rapper two years ago. He met my buddy, Rob, and they started this here band. The vocals are quite emo in that they are of a whiny sort of timbre but with a more of Rhymesayers records sort of inflection to his voice (Tanner is IMO, a fantastic and quite original vocalist). It's quite radical, I met them when I was playing Friendgetter shows last year.
I am very excited for this record, to be honest. Very solid songs with a lot of vibe and attitude.

I think I can hear the difference in acoustics for this recording spot VS your folks' living room. It sounds messier and rawer in that regard, which I think suits the material fine.
I will be receiving carpet from my homeboy, Porter, and will be recording his band Clank. again very soon. Lots of projects coming up actiually, it's an exciting time.
Gonna be recording:
Shucks, Colin and (now) Alex's band. Sort of like math-y Led Zepellin. Seriously awesome band.
Wet Brain (they have to change their name soon, however.. ) Spooky hardcore. HM-2 into chorus pedals. Gnarly.
This band here, Follies and Vices. Here's one of their songs:
Bassist sat out this show.

Sort of a shitshow handling the band with this, won't go into detail but they wanted to track/figure out these other couple over here so they could just play and whatnot while I figure stuff out. They were both playing guitar at first but Tanner's playing was too sloppy so I just convinced him to do scratch vocals to give a more "live" performance feel to the scratch tracks for Colin to play to. It made for a fine solution and I am not 100% bullshitting at the same time.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Reminds me a bit of Jad Fair/Half Japanese, vocally, and a little bit phrasing/execution-wise.
I think it responds well to this sort of aesthetic. But then, i think that most things respond well to this aesthetic, so my opinion is fairly pointless here.
On the subject of the fucked up and exploding aesthetic, I am going to be sure to do a scratch track mix for some in addition to the final. They should be pretty radically different, I am gonna go crazy with this thing. Putting on my producer hat, we're gonna arrange some horn parts and other textural stuff that should be pretty prominent throughout.
I think given the material, some amount of "studio magic" would be really fitting for the songs.

That's actually the ol' big room at my folks. Seemed necessary for this band.
I think once you hear the other guitar (second guitarist is on tour) the chorus might make a little more sense to you. Or not at all.

Well, there you go. Usually i can hear the VST-ness of a thing, and i wasn't picking it up here. I thought you stumbled across some sort of amazing magical VST sauce or something.
As far as chorus guitar goes, i don't know if i am capable of ever not hating it in any form. That is however, as stated, merely my own longstanding personal problem/vandetta, though.
Thankz, Geofferz! It's actually coming along quite nicely since this first mix. Just waiting for the other guitarist to get back and we've been trying to figure out how to properly record the vocal pedal Ryan uses live. It's a TC Helicon D1, and it runs really, really hot. Going into the interface was causing us some problems that we might have to rethink since trying to mic the PA (didna work).
Here's all five with an updated but whackyinsomeways mix:
