Guitar Rig 5 toan test: Now with moar riffs in every bocks.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13184331/GR5_test.mp3Silverburst Tele, bridge pickup, straight in. Big Dumb Riffs. Tubescreamer --> SLO --> Recto cab. Royer 121 on the edge of the virtual dustcap, room at 50%. I like that I can fuck around with the poweramp. That's good times. This sounds a lot like the sort of thing I've used for toan tests for years and years.

For a single coil, you really can't fuck with that. Is it stock? You have a fine vibrato.

Yep. It's some weird non-standard Fender pickup (I forget what off the top of my head) but it is stock. And thanks!

In the context of you using this live, I think it would totally pass by even someone who knew their shit if they couldn't see what was going on on stage. More than convincing enough for me, the low end is particularly nice.

Re: Guitar Rig 5 toan test: Big Dumb Riffs.
I sent this to Dan (newholland) and he commented on the low end as well. It does feel a lot better to play through than the Pod, which feels like I'm plugged into a 2x4. The low end sounds right here. For some uses, that's a detriment, but for me, it's cool. I should mention I had the "amp's" master dimed, and the gain's only around 9:30-10:00, with some virtual TS love. I like an OD in front much of the time for gainy stuff with realamps, even though I like getting some poweramp action happening too. I like the interaction of all the layers of filth. Also, the virtual poweramp is being fed by low voltage, is biased hot and has plenty of "sag" going on, whatever that control does. I assume it's contributing on the low end.
The next test is how well it pretends to be a wound-up AC30 and how it handles the top end. No one ever riffs like the above with a super-bright tone, y'know?
As an aside, it'll be interesting to see how dirty their AC30 model gets. I've played through a bunch of modeled AC30s and they tend to be quite anemic in terms of dirt. I have an AC30. I blew a speaker on a clip I posted on a previous incarnation of Maps. I know what they will do IRL.

Moar Riffs, Nao With Moar Skronk: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13184331/LeftOnMission_GTR_rig_test.mp3The left hand guitar is Tele --> Rat --> AC30 with Blues, Royer 121. The right hand guitar has some other ugliness added. Like a fuzz and a bitrcrusher (pre-amp, like a pedal.). Same AC30 model though.

Re: Guitar Rig 5 toan test: Now with uglyriffs!
That riff is fucking slick as fuck, and just totally brought to mind a band I really dug when I was 13 or 14. Tones sound nice too! Maybe wish they had a little bit more "real" lo-fi nastiness to them, though. Shit sounds cash, man.

Re: Guitar Rig 5 toan test: Now with uglyriffs!
Thanks! What band?
I could probably ugly it up more with a different mic model and placement. The Royer at the edge of the cone sounds like you think it would. 57 on the dustcap would probably do it. Or purposefully mismatch the cabinet, too.
I wanted to see how Guitar Rig handled the top end and brighter tones and coincidentally I needed a complete version of this on guitar, so I grabbed the Tele and bashed it out.

Re: Guitar Rig 5 toan test: Now with uglyriffs!
They're this Irish sortofhardcore band called Morello, they were big to me in terms of getting into aggressive, ugly sounds. I had been listening to a lot of pop punk and this had those hooks but with some grit to it. Didn't know it at the time, but I grew to really appreciate uglynoise.
It handed the high end really well, IMO. In terms of it not sounding brittle, thin or "digital", I'd say success.

And some Marshally toans: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13184331/GR5_Marshall_test.mp3Tele --> faux JMP. Left-hand cab is "UK '70s Black" (Blackbacks, presumably), right-hand cab is "UK '70s White" (some other Celestion iteration, presumably). Faux Royer 121 on the edge of the faux dustcap. I think it acquits itself well, having owned a '76 JMP.

Re: Guitar Rig 5 toan test: Now with moar riffs in every boc
I like this last one a bit. Listening to the first couple now(i couldn't from IL with no decent speakerz) they strike me as dark/dulled somewhat in excess, but of such a flavor that could work in certain mix arrangements. This last one however sounds just about correctundproper to me as is.

Agreed. The aggressive Marshall is toothy goodness.
