Felt like playing with my telephone mic today.

It makes my mini nylon string sound like a banjo, so i was playing it like it was a banjo(it will become readily clear upon listening that part of what i mean by this, is that i cannot play the banjo very well at all).

Heehee. Sorry about your ears.

I'm likin' this just for the title alone.

Also, there's something going on here- perhaps it's some sort of reverb? that makes it almost sound like a synth pad in the background. 'S gotta be the 'verb.

Also, ass-you-me ing that's you singing, that's the clearest vocal I've heard from you. Clear is a relative thing. I dig it.

What sort of telephone was this made out of?

Telemephone was just a standard bell-style, this one is stamped ITT, totally standard oldschool style. This is just the handset, and actually not the carbon element bit of it, but rather, the earpiece wired as a speaker/mic.

90% of this is telephone mic, but there is also an MXL2001 sitting with the element in the same place as that of the phone. The problem with this style of unbalanced phone mic is that they need heavy highpassing to cut hum out, so i stuck the mxl there with the intent to put some low back in.

But then i mostly only liked the scuzz from the phone(i added a little scuzz to boot) so i just put a gigantic reverb on the clean/bass mic and have it panning back and forth while the phone sits static and centered, basically just to bury the decent mic, but give that odd padthing you are hearing.

The reverb itself is just Ambience. I don't like playing with reverb much so i didn't do much with it other than play with the wet/dry.

Normally i haven't poasted vocals, because i have always sort of intended to write words for things. I think however, that at this stage in the game we can safely assume that this is not a thing that is fucking ever going to happen, so as they come up, i may poast more things like it. I have far more stuff like this than anything like anything else i have ever poasted, for sure. Piles and piles of it.

Of course, as i think about it, an awful lot (like a solid third?) of what i have lying around isn't EVEN two parts...

Like this one, which is also clearly(now, in hindsight) too loud:

Climbdowner.

I also didn't filter out most of the diginoise, that comes out when when i feed a lot of the telephone into a lot of a limiter. :idk:

Nor did i remove my cuckoo clock. :dastardly:

This is what triggered me wanting to play with the telephone in the first place.

I was doing my yearly(it used to be monthly, i have slowed down a lot on the production end lately) memory dump on this ghetto mini recorder that i use late at night when i don't feel like booting my computer up. It is like one of those things that a business dude(in the pre-smartphone, but post-cassette minirecorder era) would record his whatever-the-fuck-businessmen-were-supposed-to-record-in-those-days, shit.

The sound quality is so gloriously atrocious. One tiny piezo, that though i haven't torn the thing apart, i suspect to be both the microphone and the speaker. That and lots of nasty lo-fi filtering and diginoise from whatever IC chip is in it, which certainly wouldn't even be acceptable for the lousiest oldschool answering machine.

I like it a lot actually. Utterly simple. I actually prefer the way things recorded on it sound played back over its own speaker, rather than through the headphone jack that i normally use to periodically dump the audio onto my computer, in order to make room on the minirecorder, for yet more not-even half-finished bad ideas.

Like this:

Trash House Is Always Hungry.

You may not be able to hear it, but in the middle, randomly i pause, and in just that spot, a passenger jet overhead cycles down its engines, which at the time seemed decent of it to do just there.

That is some pretty suitable timing from the airplane. What a good guy.

Splinterplaces.

Actual multitracks on this one.

Not that you will note much of an improvement in sound quality, mind you. :red:

Man, soundcloud is fucking with me right now. Is it just me, or is that one of the buggier pieces of shit sites around? The sound quality on soundclick sucked, but at least the fucking thing never used to crash my browser when i went to edit something. :cop:

Can't even load the place right now.

What is that guitar sound, anyhow? Is the telephone mic involved? Also, that's tuned down a bit, no?

E standard tooned.

Sound is simple. Telecaster + Behringer reverb on cave setting(heehee i just realized this) + homemade amp with the master real low(to make more yucky) into the cheapest speaker ever made.

Microphone is just MXL2001, but it is in an odd place: close, but mic'ing more the cabinet than anything like the speaker.

Last bit, is cranking the mic pre on the tascam so that it overloads/distorts with a little prodding.

The voice is definitely all telephone. For simplicity, i only wanted to mess with two mics going at the same time. And the telephone was already plugged in so... :red:

There are a few bits in there where the low notes on the guitar are so blown out and murky I figured it had to be down to D or maybe C. Guess not. Nice work, especially considering the brightness of the guitar tone in general. That is a proper uglysound. :huzzah:

Yarr, i think that the cave reverb must have a bit of an octave down component, much like the "space" types have an octave up on the tails. It isn't really apparent on its own, but with a lot of fuzz, shit sure seems to get real wide, frequency-wise. :idk:

Also, i dun remember 100%, but listening, this must be the neck pickup, which on my guitar can be fairly bassy, which would definitely accentuate that quality.

The main thing i like, aside from the general lardiness of the sound, is the way the guitars start to eat the vocal in the later parts of the thing. Which, i am fairly certain is just the guitars winning the master bus compressor wars when the vocal is slightly quieter. I like the effect though, to me it sounds like the voice is disintegrating while surfing atop a wave of crumbling disaster.
