Fuck yeah, man. :huzzah: Them licks is hot, I really dig the bits that unexpectedly shift into a more lighthearted major-y feel before going right back into the uneasy, paranoid vibe that dominates it.

Might seem strange to say, but this almost sounds like it could be one of the slower, moody songs off of a Converge record in parts of it.

I definitely hear the converge-y-ness in a couple of the bits. I have always liked the wonky cleanish oddtuning bits he comes up with.

I really like parts of that, but not really how it is put together right now. Hoping at some point some better interesting parts emerge at some point after fucking with it for a bit.

Anyhoo.

Ten Percent Laser Beast.

Kind of on a little bit of a guitar-only kick at the moment. This one could have had voices, maybe on some later attempt.

For Sure It Was A Shitshow.

This one is kind of somehow related to the previous i think. Kind of like its long lost Ukrainian cousin or something.

Definitely not keeping up enough with my voice, and so every time i go to try to write/record, it is way out of sorts.

More slop in my flavor:

It's Not A Long Way, But It's A Long Ride.

On The Difficulty Of Choosing A Name That Does Not Already Belong To Someone.

Def got too much on it. And too little, as it should have a bass. Don't know where i'd put one now though. :red:

Very nice, digging the harmonies. Reminds me of a couple of things I really like.

How did you record these here guitars? Really dig the way they sound.

Heyo Cam, geetars are:

Mustaguar (bridge pickup, a lace sensor gold a friend gave me)
Straight into my recently rebuilt homebrew map(now basically a 6V6 marshall plexi channel with some mods to allow it to also get some voxy things when set certain ways)
Into a homemade 1x12 that has a cheapo celestion G12 in it(the speaker was $15 used, i think that they used to ship valvestate combos with these)
Into an SM57 almost-centered, very slightly angled.
There is some compression on the guitar tracks to level them, but nothing else.

The amp was pretty quiet. I really like having a shitty inefficient 12" speaker around for recording. The less magnet and efficiency, the less volume needed to make a guitar-like sound. Good for tracking in the same room as vocals at the same time. A better speaker needs more juice to make it move correctly, and so you wind up really getting pretty loud for just about everything. My good speakers sound way better with this amp, but they are about a hundred times louder, which doesn't work great as then the condenser i use for vocals picks up almost more guitar than voice.

But You Seem All Right.

The second half of this one really wants the rest of a band, but i don't feel like recording it right now. :red:

First of these two ones has a very Elliott Smith-y vibe on the close harmonies. The super harmonies are very, very dope. I know that you hate chorus but that is showing up here? Or is it just out of tune guitars doubled? This shit is very dope. One-man Beach Boys is good.

Second tune also is very good, has a nice OG indierock vibe. Like GBV/Pavement/Sebadoh. Sounds like a track off of any of those early 90's lo-fi poprock records. HAHA WAIT. This isn't even your track. Something else is playing, it's this song IAmTheSea by TheBrightonArms. That also is a nice track.

Third tune or actually second tune also has the Elliott Smith/Simon & Garfunkel vibe. This is good and I like it.

CHORUS NEVER. That is just like 3-4 guitar tracks played loose over eachother. If they made a pedal that did that i would use it. Kind of a cross between modulation and reverb and echo. But not muddy obfuscating garbage. :red:

Actually, i am talking about the one you listened to before (i changed its name because i became sort of insanely convinced that the one person i knew a thousand years ago with that name would see it and know it meant them, which is not even possible, being that no one listens to this stuff and there aren't any fucking words to it  )

Actually actually, i think you mean the riff part @ like 1:40something in But You Seem Alright. Same deal there though, 3-4 loosely played guitars.

And yeah, Brighton Arms is a friend of mine from NYC times. That tune sounds like pure Ride to me. That is also why i hesitate to follow anyone on soundcloud, it just makes listening to peoples shit so confusing.

I foresaw the elliot smiff thing for sure. :red: Sung too high and doubled/tripled parts. I try not to use it too much, because it is basically 100% his thing. Same thing as the specific high note harmony that pops out in the change in this older track here: http://soundcloud.com/chrisdeveau/021516-one-of-two-ways @ like 1:10, Very difficult to use that without attempting/achieving Elliott Smith reference.

Everyone Around Here Has Gotten Pretty Serious About Things.

Been fascinated with classic Rhodes and Wurlitzer dirty 'lectro piano types of sounds of late.

Well, half of an idea is better than no idea.

Let Go Of My Hand.

Wish i could just focus and finish some of these things (ANY of these things) for a change. But that is how it is.

Vocal stack is fucking sick, how many voices is that? Sounds awesome

Author:  chris_d [ Wed Nov 22, 2017 8:11 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Sounds From The Cave On Trash Mountain.

It is fifteen vocal tracks total, eventually.

Most of it is five vocal tracks. At the end of that section (i.e. the last two of the six "lines") about ten more show up but are pushed way back, dB-wise.

The main five are all dead centered, the later ten are all hardpanned, to both push them back individually and to give it a subtle widening effect (most apparent with headphones) there.

Also the main five have some limiting and verb on each track individually. The last ten are totally dry individually, not even a compressor on the tracks, then all ten of them just go into a little limiter and a plate reverb as a group.

It Wouldn't Work Properly, Magic-wise.

Probably should have cut the harmony section. Just got bored there really, the part went on too long. Might prefer it cut down to like 1.5 min anyhow.

My favorite version of this is a fairly batshit one with no consistent tempo that was shorter and made a fair bit less sense. Just one of those things, i guess. :idk:

Post subject:  Re: Sounds From The Cave On Trash Mountain.

Started work on this right before things got unexpectedly shitty/busy around Trash Mountain this spring.

Just realized how long ago that was. :red:

Had plans, but they will have to wait i think.

For now, it lives in two forms.

The instrumental that i never got around to drums for:

Place You Put It. (INST)

And the indication that i became bored waiting to record drums, the ill-conceived vocal version:

We Went There But... (VOC)

This one was never meant for having voices on it, and they aren't too consistent.

That is just a thing that happens when i spend too much time with something without finishing it. It gets too many voices on it.

There should be none. I know that.

Guitar parts/tone is definitely sick enough to standalone but I don’t mind it as a vocal thing. I think that there’s part where the stacking has a cool effect though, whereas in others yeah it gets diluted. Shit is rad though. I think I might fuck about and give a shot at tracking drums on it. :red:

Post subject:  Re: Sounds From The Cave On Trash Mountain.

That would be rad.

I had some ideas of how it would go, but they were so long ago, i don't even remember.

I doubt i played any of it in consistent tempos might be the only trick. Where it gets weird makes some sense to me, but it might give you some fuss because my mind is ruined and things that are inconsistent sound right to me.

It is likely I could feel my way around any wonkiness, I am not exactly the most metronomic musician out there. :red:

I need to get back on the kit though, would be a good thing to atleast take a stab at.
