https://humancompost.bandcamp.com/album/the-cold-flesh This time instead of being essentially a 3 piece band we have the full lineup, ie a lead guitarist has joined as well as the drummer from Serene Molestation... While I wanted the first EP to sound meaty and organic this time I just wanted it to sound musty, somewhat grim and slightly fucked. If you like it I am offering you a download: http://www.mediafire.com/download/f7po5 ... Master.rar |

Okay... drums were Audio Technica 2050 on kick and Drumagog triggering, Audix i5 on snare, Avantone ATOM on toms, and SM57 as a room mic, low and pointing away from the kit, through the DBX comp Snaxie sold me. I originally worked out a kick ass all acoustic tone using a 57 on the outside beater side of the kick, but then I was using wood beaters and when Allen used his felts there was no definition, so I had to obtain Drumagog to bring it back. Bass... direct and a track going through my HM-2 clone. Guitar... Simon's guitar on the left is straight through a Peavey XXX. Eddie's on the right is once again MT-2 into my 5150. They were miced with a 57 and Avantone ATOM. Simon's tone had way more 'useful' frequencies than Eddie's so I had to use mostly 57 for Eddie and mostly ATOM for Simon to make the tones blend together better. Guttural vocals are a uh, 58 rip off by a brand called Pyle. I saw them for sale at electronic components store for twenty bucks and impulse bought one. It is an okay mic, though the output seems low and for some reason they make a point of it having an impedence of 600 ohms? It went into the DBX also. Screams were the Audio Technica 2050. I had to low pass the room mic a bit to make it sound pleasing... the 57 gets a real thorny sound. Used a lot of reverb on lead, vocals and drums... it was a send to the Yamaha SPX impulse in Reaverb. Probably the quirkiest thing here is that I sent the whole mix to a cassette deck and imported it back into the computer to get some more pewp on there! |

I thought I recognized the SPX on some tom hits there! 'S got a distinctive sound, that one. I dig it. The sonics make me really want to listen to this on cassette walking around town in the dark 'cause there's nothing better to do. It has the vibe of cranked-up Walkman all over it, down to the pumping explody compression. Nostalgia-mojo abounds. I honestly can't think to pick apart the mix on a technical level as the sheer vibe of it renders any considerations of that sort irrelevant. Question: some of your lower vocals have this weird... Pinched, sorta constricted midrangey thing going on- what the hell is that? Some kind of distortion box? See: the intro to I Kill Everything I Fuck. Extra points for including a punky song like that on there- how old-school thrash of you! 'S catchy, too! |

Oh yeah, walking around in the darkness is the ideal listening method for sure. The band is our bass player Chris' brainchild, and he's all about the old school. Punky shit, old grind, those are the ingredients he likes. Those vocals are the ones where I point the cupped mic at my nose and make the sounds come out of there instead. Conner from Envenomation introduced me to them, calls them 'nasals'... It's all about disgusting, poser-repelling noises.
