Re: A DIY recording journal.
Tell me moar. As a long-time advocate of condensers on guitar cabs, I've actually been going back to plain ol' 57s and their bigger awesomer cousin the SM7B (sorta turned into Garda's do-everything mic, mostly because it does everything) on cabs lately. Something about how it sits in the mix. What are you using, and what is it doing for you that dynamics aren't? Now, I could definitely use a nice ribbon or two. But that's fairly far down my list of gear to pick up...

Re: A DIY recording journal.
It is largely a matter of space and frequency bandwidth. I feel like I can get so much more of the tone I'm looking for out of one condenser better than I've done with two dynamics. That said.. I think it's time for me to get back to the on-axis condenser, off-axis dynamic technique. Things used here: CAD GXL3000 on a Verellen 4x10 with a Musicman HD130 sitting on top of it. Oktava MK-219 on a Peavey Deuce 2x12 combo. 1x15 cab I cannot recall the make of, with a Traynor YBA-3. Shit was mic'd with a PR40. Drum "OHs" were KSM27s in that Weedywet configuration, but like, way closer to the toms. Kick was D112, i5 on snare, M179 hanging out in the front of the kit. Really kinda not totally happy with the way these drums came out, tbh. Dude has bright cymbals, and I think they got satanized a bit. Granted, this whole thing was recorded waaaayyyy too quick. The mic positions were all eyeballed and then we checked it out and it sounded fine enough, so we just ran with it because they were so goddamn late we didn't start tracking till 7.

Re: A DIY recording journal.
That sounds goodman. Of course i enjoy the low ends and the things distorting. What is the guitar sound? It almost sounds direct-to-board in parts. IMO, vocal could come up slightly. Not so much as to interfere with the massivity of the guitars/bass, just a bit. Everything else about the mix is 100%, IMO.

Re: A DIY recording journal.
'Tar tones are all LDCs, details are a couple posts up. Yeah, they are definitely some weird, glitchyish tones. Lead guitar dawgie had this whacky DBA distortion pedal that saturated like a motherfucker. With all the smashing I am doing on da masterbuss, I think that's where all the really nasty shit is coming from. And thanks, dawg.

Re: A DIY recording journal.
A mix of stuff from a band called Cool Void: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/137 ... 0SONGZ.mp3Pretty stoked on how it came out considering the way the tones in the room sounded. Multi-band compression made the guitars what they are. Drums are also quite sketchy, but it is pretty cool sound, IMO. First/live guitar take is a Marshall MG of the guitarists, and I suggested we bi-amp with my Blues Jr. (which funnily and audibly enough has some dying tubes) to get some midrange/clarity in the tone. Second/overdubbed track is my roomate's Sunn rig with lots of effects. Bass is half DI, half D112 on a very dark spot of a quite buzzy cab (Ampeg V6 on top of a Peavey 4x12). D112 has way too much studio magic going on it to create subbass. Still wishing it wasn't so indiscernable somewhat, but that helps with the sketchiness of the tracking.

Re: A DIY recording journal.
Some of it is more legible than others of it. Occasionally everything comes together nicely and it truly sounds great. Some of it is a bit messfuzzmess true, but it is still a solid recording, IMO, with a solid vibe to it, which i am into.

Re: A DIY recording journal.
Thank ya, mayne. It was really more the product of audio wizardry than anything, TBH. The guitar tones were so unfocused before multi-band compression shoved it into some sort of low/lowmid stranglehold. Still not really stoked on parts of it, but it was more or less the product of a whole bunch of unideal situations. Also, I forgot to mention it, but one of them guitar tracks (the overdubbed one) was actually the Sunn Spectrum/Traynor 4x12 with 75s. Also, homeboy was using the neck pickup. Kind of explains a lot.

A band called Falling Over: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/137 ... 0ROUGH.wavDrums are currently too loud/verbed, but I am excited. Still needs lead guitar. Bass should probably be re-tracked.. This shit might have horns all over it, as well.

Re: A DIY recording journal.
Vocals are way quiet IMO. That is, i think, aside from the fact of the mix being about 85% drums as you alluded to.
All the shit sounds good though.
What is your beef on the bass?

Re: A DIY recording journal.
Beef wiff the bass was mostly just the playing. We re-tracked it and made it far less shitty. It might have been hard to hear because the mix, but that shit was pretty damn shoddy, and that is not at all what they are going for. Anyhow, finally made a hXc band actually sound good rather than just cool. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/137 ... 20HOPE.wavYou wouldn't believe the amount of guitar bleed in the OHs. Kind of proving to be a little bit of a bastard, but I think it will work out just fine.

Re: A DIY recording journal.
Oh yeah, i can hear that actually. Sounds like just the slightest echo/boing on the guitar sound.
It sounds good though, for sure.
Are you EQing the overheads? Are you EQing the guitars? Different EQ on one or the other might be making that metallic echo stick out.
Have you tried moving the guitar tracks backward in tiny amounts to try to offset the fact that they are hitting the overheads later than the guitar mics?
Other than that one thing, everything does sound solid. I might go a little less compression on the drums if you could get away with it(might help the guitar bleed too) but i know how tricky mixing this stuff can get sometimes depending on what people bring in to record and how they do want to it. Sometimes i have found thgat i don't have as much choice as i would like in the matter, just the way the tracks sound and need to be treated to sound right.

Re: A DIY recording journal.
Yoooo, I did not even think of that. Also, the OHs themselves are pretty lightly compressed (to address that very issue), however the bus they are going to is fucking crushed. I am probably gonna back off on that a bit and get the actual transients of the drums to ya know, not completely disappear. This mix was from the same day we tracked and my ears were pretty trashed. That is a little more obvious to me now than before. However, I am hoping your idea works well, I think it would add more focus to the guitars, which is really the only aspect of the tone I am not happy with.

Re: A DIY recording journal.
Also, there is a little EQ on the tars and and on the OHs. Shelved boost at about 10 or 12k on both, little HPF on the guitars, and a bit of a mid boost on the scoopier guitar.
