Post Temp mix of a local band
http://maplifiers.net/dload/file.php?id=15

Does that link work for ya? This mix is by no means anywhere near complete yet. We just finished all the guitars today (four song demo) and I gave it a quick little job while they were sitting there and watching.

Left guitar is Laney Pro Tube Lead boosted with a Boss MT-2... right is Splawn Quick Rod boosted with a Boss SD-1... both through a Genz Benx G-Flex, miced primarily with a SM57 and a little bit of Audix i5.

Drums have triggers only for the kicks, snare is a combination of trigger and SM57 on top... toms are all SM57... two overheads (never found out which we used)...

So this recording is like, SM57 heaven. Hataz, step off!

There might be some weird cutouts (ie bad editing) on the drumtrack in parts. I should have paid more attention to what the engineer we had for drums did, but alas, I was falling asleep...

Still have to track bass and vocals.

The reverb (?) on the toms is oddly mismatched to the rest of the drumsounds, IMO.

Other than that, pretty cool.

What is your role in these proceedings?

I agree with you. If anything it should be this way with the snare, not the toms (but really it should just be balanced). As it is they have the least reverb coming off the reverb send thinger. I guess it just doesn't take much. It was a quick mix...

My role is 'producer/engineer', so I record and mix (and even make suggestions like "let's layer an acoustic guitar into this part") and such. I didn't have the equipment to record this guy's giant double bass kit so we did that at another home studio, with me sitting in the 'producer's chair' (dozing off)...

Aye, it is... and it pays. I didn't ask for much, but I am getting paid. :cop:

Coffee for sure. There was none on hand at that house. Next time I will bring a Thermos full of the good stuff.

How about them feets? Drummer is fast. I wasn't able to play his kit because the beaters are so close to the drum... I was getting no volume. Neither could the other engineer. But the drummer is fairly loud at it.

I don't know howthefuck the kids these days expect to make rock in houses without coffee.

I will make a mental note of it however, that somehow these folks exist, and that should i find myself in such a situation, i may wish to bring my coffee pot with me.

I cannot rock without coffee. Or, more accurately, i WILL not rock without coffee.

Those guitars need some help. I think it's mainly the fault of the guitarists themselves, though. Sounds like they're picking light as hell and palm muting too close to the bridge.

Drums sound pretty good. Whole mix could use some brightness.

But, for a temp mix, this shit is pretty class A stuff. I've heard worse mixes on major label albums.

I too am hearing weakwrist babydick right hand action.
However, I must say I am quite fond of the kick drum sound.
More thuddiness would be nice, but it's still very articulate without being super click-y.

It is unpossible. Back in my more metal days we'd make coffee runs during rehearsal. Some people's band rooms are littered with empty beers, ours was littered with empty cups-a-joe.

Hell, we still do that now, with much the same result.

Also, will listen later when I'm in a better position to evaluate a mix. Work ≠ The Place.

I have been playing the mix around the place and am going to update it. I wonder if I can delete the old versions from Maplifiles?

Well, here's the new mix: (oh fuck, I forgot to give it a category so the file is invisdible until Torg wipes my dumb ass. Durnit.)

Well, basically I increased the kick drum volume and scooped some honky mids off of the guitars.

Also, I think you guys might be a bit less worried about the way they picked their guitars once we do bass tomorrow?

Possibly, but unlikely.
