I am experimenting with a robot-themed side scrolling platformer/shoot 'em up. This is my first shot at a robo-guy: As you can see, this is going to take a while. |

Is that in 3D, or izzit sprite-based biz? |

Gonna be sprite based at the moment, but if I feel adventurous I might learn me some 3d modelling in Blender to use 3D sprites on a 2D plane. Right now I use 2D sprites on a 2D Plane but in a 3D environment (cube tiles and a perspective camera instead of orthographic). I guess you could call it 2.5D but it really isn't. |

Depending on what type of formats it would need, i could conceivably make a proper 3D model of such a thing for ye. I don't even know if the program i used to use works in (my current OS) Windows Vista actually. But if it does, i could do that perrty EZ. |

Not sure what program you use, but if you haven't messed with Blender it seems to do a fairly good job, though admittedly I haven't done much with it as I struggle enough with 2d art at the moment. As for what I could use, I haven't messed much with 3d animation so I really don't know what formats I would use. Chances are I would use Blender as it is free. |

The one i used was free too. Zmodeler or summat. Was compatible with lots of game model formats. Prolly Blender is too now, though i never used that one, as when it came around i was already really comfortable and quick to build with the one i was using and didn't feel like messing wif it by switching. If i had any forsight at the time however, i would have simply stolen and leaned 3Dmax, or whatever they are calling it now. Or Maya. What is the file extension the game engine uses for its 3D models yo? |

http://unity3d.com/unity/editor/importing There is a table of 3d package support at the bottom of that page. |

I have to say, I am pretty impressed with myself. This is what I have made in two hours of playing in Bender, including 30 minutes of watching a tutorial on the interface and such: http://imgur.com/wSYMx A bit slower going than painting in Gimp2, but the Blender interface really clicks with me. |

Nice man! It is such a generally flat-sided object that it is actually just about perfect for getting into 3D building with. Once you get super comfortable with it, you IMO should aim to un-square your faces to each other and give it the looser lo-fi vibe of your original skribble artz. Which IMO, would look awesome in a video game. For starters though, just get something built and textured and in-game, just for getting the full process skillz under your belt. |

Yes I plan on stretching the head a bit more on the Z axis then scaling it down on the X and Y, then start smoothing out those edges with some curves. I haven't even started messing with curves yet, I just got this far before I had to go to work. |
