That would make a good sports show theme Todge. Or like the menu music for a video game about doing freestyle dirtbike stunts. :isay:

I had an idea last night on first listening to this beat, and i think i am probably going to run with it.

If all goes as planned, it will be noisy as hell, and... i don't intend to record anything for it. First tests just now seem promising.

Todge - Sublime tone and chording... also very nice vibrato on the solo.

Snaxie - Way out of left field as always, and totally gruvenstation. :huzzah:

 I know exactly what you mean now you mention it!

I'm listening through my Grados now and the mix sounds quite thin, thoughts? It sounds really muddy through my (admittedly shit) pc speakers.

Here is what i am starting with.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... ID=9798065

Really just a first go of it, and there are certain bits that i haven't put anything over yet(like the very first bit :red: ).

Anyhow, the idea, is to use nothing for all the sounds, except for the drumbeat itself. Just cutting and looping little bits of transients and attacks.

Because all of the samples are stereo, all kinds of funky shit starts to happen with phase cancellation.

Right now i have a pitchshifter with automation on two sections. Ideally, i don't think i want to have that, but rather have the whole thing be unaltered audio stolen directly from the original drumbeat.

I think it sounds pretty good, but i think i hear what you mean, also. You might try high passing the guitars a little bit to make some more space for the bass.

You might experiment with some general post eq-ing on them actually. They might clear up a bit if you jigger with the midrange some. :idk:

Oh, and this will probably sound really weird if you don't have hugebass/subs to hear it through. Without the bass, it is just super abrasive. With a subwoofer, there are actual almost-notes to it.

This one kind of came out of nowhere.

I am really surprised I was able to mix it that well (not that well, but I actually was able to use some VSTs on every track  ), since my computer has been suckin' teh cawk.

Hurr it is:

Nice fizzfuzz snaxo. The power of Albini compels you!

It does. This wound up being a total Albini tribute. My final mix, with vocals: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/13184331/Knuckleduster.mp3

Lyrics are a true story involving my transgender friend, a black police officer and a skinhead getting his ass beat, twice. Very NSFW as I'm using a lot of bad words at snacktime. Shure KSM27 straight into the Focusrite pres. Decapitator and a compressor after the fact. Some delay and 'verb. Some random processing on the talking bits.

Go figure, the only synth on this sounds kinda like processed guitar feedback.

Now to listen to everyone else having a go at this!

Todge: Grungy! I can get my AIC on to that. I heart the toan and riffing and solo muchly. :nods:

Chris: That is glorious. :panic:  :panic: That's so wonderfully broken and fucked-up sounding.

Devin: Your bass tone, specifically- what is it? This is highly relevant to my interests. Also, is that the Talman?

 Weird motherfucker, I'll go with. Genius, I don't know, so much. Like I said before, that one's basically a Steve Albini (and his various bassists) tribute, down to the vocals and everything. I am glad you like my dementedness though. :isay:

That was, IMO, the best thing to come out of a drumjam I have heard.

I applaud your effort.

I made a real song out of it, complete with vocals. :idk: I'm not sure I've heard anyone do something that wasn't a straight-up instrumental in a drumjam before.

Bass: SX P+J w/ J pickup full blast and the P set to 4, Tone knob full blast -> Alesis Multimix 4 USB -> Andress Modern Exciter boosting the lows (Turned that raunch into a more aggressive bassy sound) -> Poulin LeCab with two of the Catharsis IRs IIRC it was the "awesome pulse" 2 and 4s. -> Otium FX Basslane Lowpass -> ReaComp Spanky Bass Comp (I might take that out our use the ReaXComp instead)

The lead guitar is the Talman tuned to standard -> Vox AD30VT on the AC30 model with a bit of the delay DI Line Out -> Alesis Multimix -> Poulin Lecab w/ Catharsis "Awesome 1" and "s-pres8" IRs -> ReaEQ

The rhythm guitar was the Tele tuned to D -> Vox AD30VT on the Deluxe Reverb model with a bit of reverb DI Line Out -> Alesis Multimix -> Poulin Lecab w/ "1on-pres5" and "2off-preshigh" Catharsis IRs -> ReaEQ

The bass has some balls to it. :nods: I'm liking that quite a bit.

Something about the fatness of the lead tone made me suspect it was a semihollow. Neck pickup?

Snaxo, that is fucking great. Total noiserock tribute, and a funny lyrical story.

RE: realsongs, there were a couple HC jams that folks had done vocals on, but they are few and far between. And none of them had any noiserock inn'em.

Interesting how well this drumsound lends itself to the Electrical Audio sort of vibe, eh? Nice big roomy snare sound.

I got totally sidetracked and haven't done anything else with what i started earlier. I couldn't decide if i wanted to record bass, or just try to create one out of pitch-shifted transients. I will probably just figure it out tomorrow. Or possibly later tonight, as i am a bit coffeed up at the moment... :panic:

Anyhow, as usual, Todge's drumjams are bast.

It's funny, I think everything I've done over one of Todge's drumjams has come out sort of like that, with big dirty bass and tortured guitar tones and dissonant chording.

And yeah, that drum sound and general uptemponess of his drumjams really lends itself very, very well to that kind of sound. There's some clever stuff going on structurally; it's not just four repetitions of a 2-bar pattern. There's Bridges And Things. They sorta force you to do something cool structurally.

Use hobo samples for pitch-shifted transients!
