I love when rappers spit little phrases real fast in the middle of a fairly straightforward rhythm, so I tend to imitate that a lot.

I'm a fan of that too. I was trying to come up with a bridge bit for the Gentleman's Rap myself where I was doing that, but I'm a bad lyricist, so I failed.

I have a couple in mine :monocle:

I just did not execute them very well.

But yes I like your stuff. Honestly I think a lot of producers tend to lean towards the "weirder" less traditional sounds these days. Plus I am white, so musically I can do just about anything with rap and still catch shit for it.

I am bobbing my head to some Ratatat right now that sounds like it using a melody played on ... mandolin?

IMO, this has always been the case. DJs/Producers have pretty much always been huge nerds. While occasionally some sort of sound trend will catch on, the sources for samples have always been wildly unrelated. Or, rather, they have been related, in their obscurity. Or, in their availability in thrift store $0.25 bins.

Most DJs and producers are just massive fucking record nerds. :idk: Even dance DJs are often surprisingly knowledgeable about wildly divergent music styles. All those samples have to some from somewhere. :idk:

I've been thinking a fair bit about this hiphop production thing. I like the straight-up geekery of it, and the not needing to rely on other musicians for anything. :snax:

...I'm considering doing a couple tracks with beats sampled off a Sisters Of Mercy song and a Nick Cave song, for one...

Expect tracks featuring Giving Ground and Red Right Hand in the next couple days.

Badass.

On a side note, I am starting to get back to a normal breathing pattern, so I should be able to take up rapping once again.

Awesomesauce.

I am totally sampling from an '80s goth record and some dreary gloomy-voiced singer-songwriter.

It took me a while to get back on the beatzmaking; I have been occupied.

Is the looping of the Nick Cave sample too jarring and abrupt? Haven't gotten around to doing much with this yet.

Hell naw, the looping sounds superduper. If you can pull the plucked strings(? or whatever) bit up a bit in the mix, it would be nicey nice. Also maybe pull the compression back a bit on that cymbal. Needs some space for the boom crack to come through. Udderwise our imaginary rappers will be more likely to get lost innit.

One thing i like about hip hop beats. You can really do absolutely whatever the fuck you want. As long as you have a big loud kick on the the one and a snare on the three. Even if the rest of the beat is a poly-rhythmic clusterfuck, the boom crack will keep it together. :huzzah:

I think that would be Mr. Cave beating on a Hammond, actually. Unless you're talking about the banjo or dobro or whateverthefuck that is. Fiddling with the drum levels should even stuff out, methinks.

Mostly. I'm sure there's a way to bring the stringéd thing up. Even if it means doubling the track on those hits.

Just listened to all of these beats again.
And bro;
They're fucking super ill. Makes me want to write some shit up for them..
I might do just that while I'm up in Alaska.
