What was the old BYOC Delay based on? Or was it one of their own designs?

It is based on a digital chip, the PT2399, that is best suited for analog-sounding delays. Meaning basically that the repeats get dark and taper off reasonably quickly.

Circuitwise, the BYOC is almost identical to the superpopular DIY project called the Rebote.

Actually, a really large number of delays, DIY and boutique, are based on the PT2399. Forinstance: the GGG PT-80, the Echo Base, the BJFE Deep Blue Delay, err, the Earthquaker echos, IIRC the Skreddy echos, etc.

Actually, in general, if advertising materials for a delay say "analog-voiced" or "analog sound" for just about anything but one of the Boss DDs, chances are pretty good that it is PT2399-based. The chips are cheap and simple, and lots of folks have put stuff together with them.

The main downside with them is that they get kind of nasty at long delay times(like over a second). That is why so there are many "analog voiced" approaches. Analog delays are generally similarly restricted timewise, and also need lots of filtering to keep ugly artifacts from joining the signal in the repeats. It is way easier and cheaper to build with PT2399s than the BBDs that analog shit uses though.
