Hehehe yes. I think this means the snare is a keeper...

I am also liking how it sounds unmuffled in this clip. There's just more going on. It's a different scenario when I'm sitting right in front of the snare though. I think I'll just muffle a bit less than I am now, and do whatever sounds best when mics are pointed at it. For live in fact I guess I'd be best off with no muffling whatsoever, just so I can make sure I get heard. I mean my band's going to gig a lot of shit holes, with little to no sound reinforcement for the drums.

It is definitely something to pay close attention to with snares when deciding how "wide open" to run them.

Honestly, i used to hate my snare in person. It is actually kind of BOING. And it can kind of throw you off in fast stuff, because the hits don't sound as tight or defined.

BUT. When recorded, it sounds so much better, to me. So i made myself get used to playing with the looser sound, and forcing myself to play tighter even though you can kind of get away with a looser approach when it rings that much.

And actually, now, i hate playing on a heavily damped snare. Actually, i have been running my whole kit realllly wide open lately. I even put a front head on the kick, with nothing inside it, to play with that vibe a bit. Boooomy.

For really blasty stuff though, you might find the dampening coming across better recorded. For anything but straight up blasts i run nothing on top with a really ringy single ply head. For blastier stuff, i will put a couple inches of blue painter tape on until it brings it down some. :idk:

No more muffling, tuned tighter into grind drum territory the ring is perfect. :dukes:

What heads/snare strainers are you running?

Evans reverse dot on top, a clear Remo Ambassador below, strainer is the Pearl one but it's classy and copper colored like a ... What are they called, Puresound strainers?

I think though, from listening to some live clips Whenufap made, that a lot of how audible things were has to do with the fact that I had a vocal mic, which picked up the rest of the kit too.

Also, what is the rim like on the Sensitone? Is it normal pressed steel, or is it classy cast biz?

It's triple flanged hoop, but a reasonably thick one

Makes sense, as that is how the original Supraphonics rolled too. And they are the vast majority of fine recorded snares from all times. It is just a solid and effective snare design that is difficult to fuck with. There is definitely a reason why they are so popular, and why just about all of the major drum companies make a copy or an attempt at a copy, of them.

The snare i use is basically the cheapest of the cheap, and, luckily as it turned out, i broke the top rim back in my badmetal days. I wound up replacing it with a cast one and that is about the entire reason that i am still using that snare. The volume and cut of the thing went through the roof with it. Lately i have been less happy with it though. The top rim is nice as hell still, and basically the only reason i can continue to use the thing, but the rest of the drum, i feel is lacking, compared to a proper drum.

I have my goggles on the Ludwig Black Magic these days. Expensive, but that seems like a real fucking nice snare. Basically a Supraphonic with a cast rim. Some day maybe. :poop:

Oh yeah, cast rims are baller. Totally puts some nuts into a snare. It is a mod I have considered with mine, but meh, I think I like it how it is.

Breaking a rim is pretty... gaddamn. I recall you used to use broomsticks or something of the sort though?

You know Pork Pie also has a Supraphonic sort of deep brass snare. Their shit goes pretty cheap too...

Yeah, Say Ocean's broski has one of those. I have definitely looked into them.

Realistically, a used one of those(or getting superlucky on a pawnshop/thriftstore supraphonic) is what i am likely to wind up with. Err. Some day.

That is definitely the style i want. Luckily so many folks make versions of them at so many pricepoints. I would be proper screwed if i was addicted to the sound of like 14" deep bubinga snares or something.
