I am trying to get my SD2 shit together. I got all of the different mics into different outs to help control levels (haven't messed with it yet for this mix though) and actually messed with velocities to try and give it a more live feel.

Am I getting closer to better drum mixes? I feel like this is probably one of my better sounding drum mixes.

It is the Let Me Go - Drums Only track

Kick drum sounds killer, brocephaladon. :rawk:

Legitimate answertime!

The drum sounds themselves are good. I'd vary up the velocities on the hits a bit more, and if you need to make up for the volume difference in a mix context, that's where a compressor comes in. Re: velocity variation, use it to accent the beats- ONE and two and THREE and... sorta deal. It's hard to really evaluate drum sounds outside of a full mix context though.

Also, re: the hats in SD2, to really get them dynamic you need some really stupid velocity fluctuations, I'll warn you ahead of time.

Uh oh. I am reaching my bandwidth limit for that terrible terrible media player. I guess this is a good time to start looking for a new media player plugin for my site.

Maybe try refreshin'?

And the kick is the NY Avatar 18x22" GMS.

Yeah I have a lot more work to do with the hat and snare velocities. I have barely touched the kicks aside from dropping them all a bit (I like hard hitting kicks though), but the next go through is going to be a lot more drastic changes to the hats and kicks especially.

Yeah, sounds pretty good dood.

You may even want to go further with the velocity messings on the hi-hats. Or if you have a couple similar hi-hat samples, maybe throw some alternate ones in. EDIT: Derp, what Snaxo said.

The main thing, is that, even the most solid drummer, is going to hit things with a wide variance in angle and force, depending on what his/her other limbs are doing at any given time. In addition to that, cymbals start moving as soon as you hit them. Hi-hats distort and shift every time you hit them, so even if they ARE hit with the same force and angle, they won't sound exactly the same twice in a row.

So you gotta mix them up if you want them to sound natural. It is more of a subtle thing, and becomes less obvious in a mix, but when the drums are on their own, it sticks out a little more.

I have a bad habit of assuming uploaders move as fast as I type. I will start uploading, start typing, post and then realize I have about 20% left to upload. :red:

My songwriting has such a formulaic structure to it. :red:

VERSE/CHORUS/VERSE/CHORUS/CHORUS/BRIDGE/VERSE/CHORUS

:isay:

I'm writing the bridge now.

To be fair, there was no link up when Chris posted that. :red:

Re: SD2 velocities, to get the snare fills to sound at all like a real drummer, you can have massive fluctuations in velocity. Even if you're doing all superhard hits, you can go from 127 to 90 in the course of a fill and have it sound quite good. Ghost notes, I generally have way low, like 40 or so. You can have a 40 velocity swing in your hats, from around 80 to 40 velocity (I never have hats hit really hard) depending on the pattern and it'll sound totally natural. Kicks, you'll probably want up pretty high, but even then you can have a pretty wide area to play with and still have hard hits. Even just fucking with the velocity can introduce a lot of groove into what you're doing- it's the easiest way to make fake drums sound- or, rather feel real, assuming you have good samples to play with.

Well my snares are in that range of velocities, but my hats were a lot closer.

I started messing with them and was going from 90 to 60s on them, plus I mixed in a few different openness samples. It really does help control the groove of the song though. Much better than the terminator sounding drums I had before :red:

Uploaded a new version. Still think I need to nail down a few of those velocities.

Better?

Also, i hear you on the verse-chorus-verse-etc... I do the same damn shit.

Actually, i am even worse. I usually write like this:

Chorus>Bridge>Different Bridge>Chorus>1st Bridge>Third Bridge>Chorus>Chorus.

And then i sit around wondering why it is so difficult to write lyrics for the "verse" section. After a couple of weeks, i give up on the verse section(that doesn't exist really anyhow) and post some abandoned version on soundclick with place holder drums on it. Rinse, repeat, etc.

Ok gotta knock out 4 pages then it's recordering time.

I notice one advantage of the Saffire USB. It is small and power over usb, so I can record DI guitar and bass from my couch quite easily.

Dude... try this. If there's any room mics at all kill them. Then bleed everything into the channel called 'Bullet' and use as much as you want.
