I would hate to see Marco Minneman tied up in such a shitty band.

I understand and support the concept of top level drummers being able to pull top level paychecks, but i wouldn't want to see Minneman contained/restrained like that. He is wayyyyyyy too good for Dream Theater.

Also, as much as he protests, i really do feel that Derek Roddy will never make as good a 'normal' drummer, as he makes a 'metal' drummer. Seeing him put up against some really flexible hitman drummers like Minneman and Mangini really makes it pretty obvious to me.

It is a good question IMO, and one that i have trouble with: At what point do/should you stop continually trying to battle and work against your strengths and allow yourself just run with them instead?

Though there is not often a livable paycheck in that, unless your strengths happen to lie within the realm of cheesemetal or pop music, so i see where Mr. Roddy is coming from somewhat.

Even Derek didn't expect or intend to get the gig (I've been following on his message board), but couldn't turn it down because it's bad business. In fact I think no one in Dream Theater or even at Roadrunner (if they actually are in touch) expected him to really have a shot.

I think he was included mostly just to add some interest to their little reality show promo deal. His drumming is a hot commodity, on youtube, after all.

You could even wager that all of them but Mangini were included just to build some hype.

The dood from Darkane, i feel is actually a really good fit. Even though i prefer pretty much anything darkane has done to anything DT has done, as far as drumstyle and production is concerned, he makes a good fit. But he isn't as grandstandy as Mangini, or even Minneman, so i can see why coming off of Portnoy they might lean towards someone more theatrical.

Mangini also has much bigger name recognition though. That combined with the fact that he is a little cheesy and a similar age and presentation to the rest of the DT doods(unlike Marco, who has much more of a young punk vibe to him) makes him just the obvious choice there.

I am pretty sure no one else in the group would have been as near to tears as Mangini about getting the call either.

Excellent drummer, but a bit OTT across the board. Definitely similar to Portnoy in a lot of ways. Though arguably, a better drummer than him also.

As a extreme novice drummer and someone who has never listened to Dream Theater, I felt Mangini and Minneman were probably the best fits. Mangini just seemed to have the right attitude and style for the band, and Minneman just didn't seem to take it seriously enough. I still preferred Minneman, his part really caught my attention, but I feel like Mangini really really wanted it, and did go a bit over the top to get it. And for DT, it seems over the top is right up their alley.

I also liked the Aussie.

With Minneman, that is just how he IS. That is why he makes such a great sideman for Paul Gilbert. Musically, they are like twins. Hyperskilled superhappy goofball savants.

Again, wayyy too awesome for DT.

Yeah. I could see them being all serious and epic on stage and hi doing something in the background to make the crowd laugh. Overall I think he could do better with DT, but Mangini just fits the band better.

Minneman can definitely do better than DT.

Polyrhythmic limb independence stuff. And also, super fast, maaaan...

I'm a fan of this guy and I might start listening to Dream Theater again with him.

Marco Minneman was my favorite of them all; guitarist from my metalliband is with me as well. And he actually listens to Dream Theater. I liked (mostly; I liked them more as a heavy band than anything. It seemed the most natural versus them going off on ballads or prog jams) some of their records; Awake, Scenes and Train Of Thought I still have somewhere, even though I haven't listened to them in years. I had the tab book for Awake and gave it to said guitarist. Digression. Lots of good drumming to be had here.
