Re: Record a kit with one mic
Hmm, better than i expected. But i wonder how it translates to other kits, tunings, and setups. That is also pretty close to what newholland likes to use for his modified glyn johns setup, just with the mic pulled back from the snare more. Interesting, and easy enough to mess with. I will probably check it out some.

Re: Record a kit with one mic
http://soundcloud.com/geoffhodsman/singlemicrecordingI thought it recorded the kit pretty well, except the furthest tom (ten inch) is a bit distant, and the ride cymbal is a bit much. I usually just use the kit as a four piece though, so the tom isn't such an issue and I think it'd be easy enough to move the ride cymbal. I'm kind of curious what kind of sounds someone with a double bass kit might get with this. Logically they'd just mic the kit twice, with a condensor over each kick drum, each pointed towards the snare. And then pan the mics, and we're in stereo.

Re: Record a kit with one mic
What mic did you use? It does sound decent. I am thinking that in a mix though, it might not be enough snare, and maybe too much cymbal... I still intend to experiment with it, just being lazy lately.

Re: Record a kit with one mic
I used one of my AT2020s. The low end was a little lacking so I boosted that.
I actually felt like it needs more cymbal? Definitely provides enough kick drum. Definitely feeling the lack of snare. After listening muchly I think another mic would fill out well. I suppose it would have to be equidistant from the snare for phase reasons...

Re: Record a kit with one mic
When i say cymbal, i mean all of them, especially the ride. In a mix, that shit would be quite loud.

Re: Record a kit with one mic
Oh. See the ride is the only one I thought was too loud, the rest not so much.

Re: Record a kit with one mic
No, i agree with you, but i wasn't making any distinction between what cymbal was what is all. I suppose, if you are willing to move the ride far enough away, you could still work with it as a set up. Because once you put that second mic in, i dunno, but there are tons of two mic techniques that rule. It would be interesting to see if you could get something good happening with leaving the one mic in place as illustrated here and just adding another, or if one of the other 2-mic setups would sound better...

Re: Record a kit with one mic
http://soundcloud.com/geoffhodsman/drumtwomicsAdded a 57 to the left side, pointed at the snare, the same distance from the snare as the AT2020. More snare and hi hat, basically... I think I'd be down to use this set up for rough recordings, even proper ones when a rougher aesthetic is desired.
