Post If you needed to get a set for as cheap as possible ...
What brands, models and particulars would you be looking for?

First off, for me, simple is better. I've said it before, but I could be perfectly happy with a 3-piece set, so I am not looking for something crazy. However, some toms, a ride and a crash would definitely be welcome.

Suggesteeones?

Go on Craig's and see what's going in your area. :huzzah:

1. Craigslist yo. Or Want Ads. Or pawn shops. Or yard sales. Never ever ever buy drums new.

2. Yamaha, Ludwig, Pearl, Tama, all are good at all price ranges. Buy whatever you can find the best deal on.

3. Looks for full kits used. You can find a 4-5 piece with all stands, pedals, and cymbals for $2-500 depending on who is selling, what they are selling, and why they are selling it(i.e. if they know what they have, or care).

4. The main things are that you:
•Buy drums that are made out of actual real wood, not some kind of wood/plastic composite.
•Buy shells that are round, with rims that are round and not dented or cracked.
•Buy drums that have rims on both ends, and ideally heads on both sides as well.(and ideally proper clean/new resonant heads on the resonant side. Buying resonant heads is much worse than having to buy bass strings. Basically a non-fun waste of money and effort. Starting with them is easiest, and they pretty much never need to be replaced once they are there)

You can probably find a four piece kit with decent cymbals and stands for less than $300, i think. I know doods who have done even better than that, but it is a reasonable number, for acquiring a solid/decent/usable drumset.

For cymbals, see what you can find. You might find a kit being sold with decent brass.

Otherwise, stick to the names, Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste, Meinl. AND BUY USED.

The Sabian B8 series are often surprisingly good for the bottom-of-the-line offerings. The low end Zildjians(ZBT? ZXT? Their new naming format fucks me up) are not very impressive in my experience. Low end Paiste are very nice sounding but may not last too long before cracking.

Sometimes you can get a crazy deal on some nice old Zildjians. They are kind of the best thing out there for good sounding flexible rock cymbals. The old ones. The new ones, folks often want a lot of money for. Which is totally backwards because the old ones are the nice ones.

But the main thing to note, is that all cymbals are the worst of all drum parts, for losing value once they are used. Hold out and shop around and you can get $350 cymbals for $80(or less) all over the place.

The best thing is when doods(or doods' parents) sell their drumshit in package deals. You can easily pick up thousands of dollars worth of shit for a hundred or couple hundred dollars.

Oh yeah I am Craig'n in no doubt. I just needed to know what the bits I needed to look for were, which ye answered pretty much perfectly.

There are actually quite a few full sets for sale in my area. Drums are the one thing that pop up often for seemingly good prices on the regular.

Maybe they only have them here in Canada then. They are really bad. They are obviously pressed from the same molds or whatever as the B8s, but they are baad. They are not bronze, they are some shitty yellow colour. When you hit them they don't respond as much as a bronze cymbal, nor do they sound as rich.

Wow, even with the outrageous shipping prices, MusicGoRound has some cheap ass sets.

Ah, they sound like they might be the shitty laquered jobbers that cymbal makers keep trying to palm off on the poor sucka noobs in four-cymbal-for-$100 packs?

Maybe. I believe they were recently rebranded as SBr. They are made of brass...

Oh, as a further note: avoid: CB Percussion, low end DDrum, and PDP. There is no really good reason to go that low end, unless you can get the kit for $25 or free. The hardware will betray you, and the shells will sound terrible.

I am finding Pearl Export and Forum series on the cheap. Also Ludwig Accents and Tama drums with no series name attached but look like wood.

Hey now, PDP also has some good sets.

Pearl Export > Forum

My drum kit is a Ludwig Accent CS. I want a new kit sort of bad but it actually isn't that bad. Much better than the CB kit I had previous. You've heard my Ludwig Accent enough times. I did upgrade the snare, but the stock one is decent.

Like I said, even with the ungodly shipping that is cheaper than most of the shells I am seeing locally.

I am currently rocking a Ludwig Accent set, but it is an older birch one. These days they are a different wood combo i believe. But still solid and usable. Also, the hardware is generally pretty decent for low end stuff on them.

Pearl Exports are one of the most commonly available kits out there. Probably 90% of craigslist will be either those or the Tama Rockstars. Some folks prefer the mounting hardware of the Tamas, but i tended to get along with the Pearl style(which is also what my Ludwigs use).

Any of those would make great first kits.

Also, consistently overlooked, but really fairly consistently a good sounding drumset, pretty much all of the Yamahas. Great kicks and toms on them, even the lower end ones. They are generally, in my experience, much better than the other stuff in their price range. As a drummer who already has a cheapo kit, if i were to buy a new one for myself, i would probably go straight to looking at the Yamahas...

It seems like Yamahas are always solid and affordable instruments across the board.

Yeah, well, okay ones. But with Exports and Rockstars And Accents going for what they do used, there isn't much of a reason to go PDP or CB unless you can get them free. They really are the cheapest of the cheap for hardware, rims, lugs, mounting, etc. :idk:

Yeah, they kind of have a lock on that. They are weirdly consistently solid.

I could give less of a fuck about the cracked cymbal, that is cheap as fuck for a set with most of the hardware.
