Hopefully I can get some time with my drum kit tomorrow.

I bought one of these things, and I'm thinking I'll make some sort of demo of it.

For the longest time I had basically no reso head on the kick, but I put the ported Evans head back on to mount the Kickport, and damned if it didn't sound better already.

The Kickport is pretty gnar though. Maybe a bit subtle in the clip I posted but I can certainly 'feel' the difference. It is a bit easier to do my double strokes, I guess the head is bouncing better. Also it just generally feels like the kick drum is more powerful.

I recorded by just putting one of my AT2020s five feet in front of the kit.

Listening to the clip, I feel like there is a lot more focus on a specific low frequency, as opposed to a big mix of frequency peaks from low to low mid, and the punch is more pronounced. So basically it sounds closer to what one might morph their kick into in their DAW.

Very interesting.

I can basically not hear much of a difference at all.

Actually, i *think* i hear a difference, but i kind of suspect that it is psychological.

Which certainly is not to say anything about whether the thing makes a difference or not, just that i don't think it comes across much on this recording. I totally know firsthand about things that make an obvious sonic and feel difference to me when playing that the microphones never pick up though. The human ear is trickier than just about any microphone. It can be fooled, but it can also pick up some things easily, that are very difficult to catch via mic capsule.

Yeah dood, all it would take is like an hour with some chickenwire/papier-mâché, and some paint. Even fucking better if you have two kicks in your kit.
