Re: One of those isolated drum tracks
I've heard this before, but since you posted it, I had to go listen to it again because I know how good it is. His dynamics are phenomenal. That man can work a snare drum. I'm wondering- double pedal or single foot for the quick doubles?
I note a couple of the fills are seriously boosted in volume, too. Little production thing worth remembering.
Should we make this the official Isolated Drum Tracks Thread?

Don't like the drum mix(cymbals+shells recorded separately, sounds like disco drums to me(a unique sound sure, but not one of my favorites)), but it is an interesting Grohl tune.

There's some funky shuffly business in there that I never really appreciated before a spotlight was put it on it like this. But shit, yeah, this guy rules.

I always liked the drum sounds on the two records after that one. They were a little less verby in the mix. Though, isolated they still sounds pretty verbed up.

Squeaky-ass kick pedal, and some seriously fucked up "bad" fills near the end. 130% awesome.

Sounds like it was recorded into a Tubescreamer. Love the metrognome. This is also ripe for crusty sampling usage.
Superstition, damn. This is a contender for funkiest track ever. Thing has a groove the size of the Marianas Trench. The drum performance is hardly technical perfection. Doesn't matter. And is it just me, or does that snare pull hard to the right?
I'm often shocked how much cool snare stuff is going on on a lot of these tracks. Unfortunately a lot of the one-hand rolls, ghost notes, etc. disappear in mixes.
I love this stuff. It's educational as to what good drum tracks sound like nekkid. In general, isolated tracks illustrate what you can get away with in a mix and don't have to go out of your way fiddling with. Distortion, obvious gating, mutes and edit points, bleed, random noises, and often pretty substantial amounts of 'verb to make the 'verb itself audible in the mix. None of this shit's on a grid. It's all excellent.

Funny how much 'verb is happening here. There's even layers of 'verb- there's some gated stuff plus the room. In the context of the mix, the drums sound like they were recorded in a closet.
Some sampling action going on here. Pretty obvious with the nekkid drums, despite being not so much on record. IIRC Fredrik Nordstrom blended a snare sample from Reign In Blood and a kick sample from Vulgar Display of Power on this.
