Post Trying to find a particularly fast crash cymbal..
So, I am playing a lot of drums these days. Like to the point where I am kinda more of a drummer than a guitarist. :red: But I am not really playing rock drums most of the time, more like percussion-y shit, sort of. Mostly playing with toms and snare and keeping time with my feet on the hi-hat for a world music-y kinda feel.

AND SO! I am looking for a super fast, bright crash with almost immediate decay, almost like it's gotta gate on it. I've been looking up videos on da tube looking for something but have yet to find much of anything that has the specific character I am looking for. It is almost china-y in it's decay and brightness, but with a much less dissonant, trashy tonality to it.

Quite naturally, I am trying to rip off this band:

Every picture I've seen shows him with a big ass Zildjian, but that does not really help. :red: I would assume it must be a very thin cymbal, maybe even with tape or some other shit muting it? I don't know.

Just wondering if anyone's got any ideas or knows of any cymbals. :red:

I was going to suggest that it sounds like you are looking for a cymbal stack. You can also make yer own by putting shitty cymbals on top of each other if you have a source of shitty cymbals around. :idk:

I wouldn't subject good cymbals to that sort of treatment. Too expensive to abuse like that, and lesser cymbals would sound fine for a stack.

That probably would be the best way to go about it.. Unfortunately no shitty cymbals running around really. What I might have to do, is buy some shitty cymbals.

I kinda feel like that weird spiral stacker deal might be a good way of going about it though. I've got a 16" Zil crash that I'm quite fond of but don't really use anymore cause it's just not really in the cards for what I've been doing. I imagine that that little thing couldn't do much harm. :idk:

I have a 16" thin crash that is quite fast. Moreso in the band mix, where the decay gets eaten up.

The full band dynamic/compression thing definitely helps but we're playing not-incredibly-loud or constantly busy music. A lot of what I am doing with the cymbal is sparse accent stuff kinda like in that song in the OP with clean guitar/bass so the sustain never really gets sucked out by other transients unfortunately. Essentially what I need, is something that will make it's noise and then immediately get out of the way of the next hits coming from drums that are relatively quite quiet.

I checked out my 80's Zildjian Medium Crash and it is def too gong-y and dark to quite get what I am looking for, even with something dampening it I am sure. I am gonna have to keep on the look out for a really thin, really bright fast crash.
