I get my crack from ho's.

Fuck I had nothing to contribute, but wanted to let you fux know I was reading and would like to contribute, but I honestly had not mic'd drums in a long time, so my opinion is shite.

Carry on, nothing to see here. :monocle:

I am wanting the under snare mic very much. It is definitely part of my 'signature' recorded snare sound. I like those wires... I want to hear them! Also once you flip the phase I found a whole lot more body was added to the snare sound from the bottom mic.

I am definitely not going for some Sneapy super isolated sound. What I have in mind is quite natural sounding, and also a little raw. Something very old school grind. I will be triggering the kick through Drumagog still, but not to an extreme. Everything else I intend to sound quite natural. I also want to get some crunch going on the snare mics, so I will probably have some VSTs all up in it. That should really amp up the aggressive grind factor... Yes... the snare... crunching a little, with lots of snare wire.

All this thread is doing for me is making me realize how much of an amateur I am at recording music.

Truth.

Come to think of it, I may not be amateurish enough.

You think the built-in mic on a Macbook would work for recording whisper-sung vocals? I mean, I figure since it is on a Mac it would at least be on par with most vocal/instrumental mics.

:idk: There are a million ways to do this stuff.

As an alternative to lots of mics, you can also get excellent rock sounds with one mic hanging from the ceiling and one mic in the kick.

Anyhow, you are an indie rock dood, you don't need to worry too much about a lot of the stuff we are talking about WRT deathmetal drum tracking. :idk:

Lots of great records have been made with almost no thought given to the technical aspects of recording. "Let someone else worry about it" is a valid modus operandi for a creative person, IMO.

Like for instance, yeah, acid-free paper and proper gesso with artist grade paints, this is how one needs to put together a painting that is meant to last forever. But, at the same time, you have Jackson Pollacks and Jean-Michel Basquiats making important shit on anything, with anything. The art made, the artists dead, it is now some museum curator's problem. I say, let them have it. It often isn't worth obsessing over.

If i could go back a few steps in technical knowledge, and forward a few in creative ability, i would absolutely do so.

I also don't have an actual drumset for this reason. Too much work to setup, mic and record properly.

That and I could not play it in my apartment and haz no other place to store it.

But yeah, I am much more worried about the creative side of recording. I don't have a pro setup, or any reason for one, so my punk-rawk rig is just fine. I now have mics, but I need to learn to use them properly. I think I am through using VSTs for my guitar tones. I will use them for EQ/Comp and added EFuxory/extreme tones, but for my main tones I am just liking what I am hearing in the room more, and would rather try to get something closer to that. Also, I think my pedals sound better running through a real amp into a mic.

Furthermore, whenever my amp is finished and back from Zach, I want to be able to mic it something close to decent, so I might as well get practice in now.
