Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
What about 30w EL34 compared to 50w EL/34/6L6? amp dependent of course.... My Hot Cat's power section isn't meant to be super clean, but I'm pretty sure the Laney's is... Well not super clean, but Marshally clean, as in once you get a little power tube overdrive its I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with that Laney if/when I fix it

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Btw, Miz Jen said she would siihp your attenubator back on one of her poast office trips on a day that is non-shitty. Thy will be done. The bass session last night was... not a total wash, even though we didn't actually get anything tracked. There was an issue with the files; they were tracked at 32 bit float in Nuendo and Logic on the machine at the 'Drome is only supporting 24 and wouldn't convert 'em. So we spent the evening doing production work, basically, going over tones and how we want certain parts played. We busted out a vintage EHX Small Stone and are probably gonna use that on some stuff. I wouldn't mind finding a way to blend it in parallel; it's a bit much on one of the slappa-da-bass parts we wanted to use it on, but the effect itself is cool, if massively unsubtle.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
30w 2xEL34 is something I've only seen in the Hot Cat, honestly. I don't know where they're getting that wattage rating from, like Bogner rating a 2xEL34 Shiva at 80w. That, actually, I sorta get from "if you turn up all the way" vs. rating clean power.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Hotcat El34 pair @30w is because of the low B+ voltage, biasing voltages, and the cathode biased power stage.
Marshall 50w and the Shiva 80w are due to higher B+ voltages and fixed bias setups. Also, depending on era, the marshall's "50w" might tend to run a bit on the modest side, in reality putting out a similar amount of violence to the Shiva, like 60-70+ watts or so. The 100w marshalls for instance, commonly produce more to the tune of 150+ watts in reality.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Cathode biased vs fixed biased, different plate voltages and different OTs primaries make up the differences between different amps... The hot cat has a mid/low plate voltage and is cathode biased. I did the math when I was building the amp and it all came out to be something like 28 or 32w I don't remember right now. And to be honest, I'm not sure what are the exact plate voltages for my amp. It sounds good and doesn't red plate is good enough for me and just as I was about to press send chris_d comes in with a more awesome sounding explanation

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Having owned a JCM 2000 and a '70s Marshall at the same time, I'll leave you to guess which one was more, er, well, you know. Interesting; I'd wondered how they were getting so little wattage out of that Hot Cat and why the Shiva was rated so hot. The Shiva I figured was rated at max vs. clean power, but the Hot Cat I was unaware. Tanks.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
This reply is long and involves the least exciting subject matters anywhere... A situation brought on largely by my parents being terribly unorganized, continues to be made murky by their intense disorganization. Basically, they don't have their shit together, and haven't had it together well enough to file multiple years worth of tax returns. The IRS just recently learned that they were both living in the same house in IL, making THAT one their "primary residence" and this one a secondary one. In light of that situation the IRS seems much more eager to take their taxes from the secondary house(supposedly, they only rarely attempt the seizure of a 'primary residence'). I still need to read the letter they sent my parents. My mom, continuing to be unorganized, left the documents in IL, neglecting to remove them from the car when my dad dropped her off at the airport. Specifically, what i find unclear at the moment, is whether The Man is attempting to levy the wholefucking house, or whether it is more like a lien which means that mom+dad cannot sell it without giving The Man what he says they owe him. The use of the term 'levy' would seem to me to indicate an outright seizure, but i need to read the damn letter, because frankly, i do not trust my mother's interpretation of said letter. I love my mom, but she is batty. So basically, worst case scenario: It is a levy on the property, where they intend to seize the whole thing to recoup whatever they think my parents owe. In this case, i need to move out soonish; i assume there will be some sort of eviction process. Usually, this type of seizure notice would mean about a month's worth of time to request a legal hearing and battle back to make other arrangements than allowing the property seizure to take place. My parents have spoken with the Man on the phone, but again, i am way skeptical of whether or not that will suffice, because my parents, while i love them, suck spectacularly at financial and property management. I would guess that said hearing would have to be arranged via written request, because that is how government pricks and banks tend to operate. Slightly better case scenario(and the one i am hoping to find when i get a chance to read the IRS letter): The IRS merely wants to ensure that should my parents attempt and succeed in selling the house, The Man gets first dibs on what is owed. In this situation, i would be allowed to continue to live here in hobotown while my disorganized parents slowly get their multiple years of taxes filed. The way my mom first put it was that it was a straight up house seizure letter. Honestly though, the amounts they are talking about make it seem to me that a house seizure would be excessive. This house(well the land anyhow - the house itself is a sinking/collapsing piece of shit) is worth a fair bit of money. In fact, unless the IRS gets creative with fees and fines, i don't see how the years of missed tax returns can possibly add up to enough to make the house seizure a reasonable legal course. The IRS are pricks though, and i sure don't trust them to be super reasonable here. I will find out soon enough i think. The situation is retarded and ridiculous, but it is the kind of thing that my parents get into on occasion. I remember way back when i was a bit younger i actually had to help them pay a few thousand dollars for some tax or real estate sort of bill. I generally tend to not spend money when i am making it, so i (luckily) had way more money back then than a high school kid should, generally. For this situation though, i can't do shit for them. TL/DR: We will see, but i am currently half-optimistic. Depending on how this pans out, i completely agree.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
damn chris. Well good luck to ya in your endeavors. A too believe that that a lien is more likely for your situation, and i worked for a collection agency in the past ;).
Wanna know what i learned today? I pass out like a bitch when i get blood taken. One minute needle's in and im fine, next minute, my ears are ringing and my head is in the nurse's lap. Its funny though, ive had numerous piercings and never ever passed out during those.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I posted in the wrong stickythread. Best of luck to you, Mr. Chris. I hope it works out for the... best? The best being that you're not the one who's fuck'd, which is still shitty, but at least you're not someone's couchperson. I'd say "hugs", but you really don't seem like the type. This has been a shityear so far for most of the people I know.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
damn Chris. Just dayum. Hopefully you can stay in your house, but you never know with the Man. If there's anything I can do you let me know. @ Snaxie - fuck that does seem like a nice deal. I don't think they make the highest quality cabs but loaded with the greenies it should suffice just fine.
