But to answer your original question seriously, yet, one could say that's an early example- one's actions decide one's fate. The ancient Greeks are notorious for that, the whole concepts Western civilization is based on and all. It certainly predates Kierkegaard and Nietzsche by a couple years. It's, I suppose, as good a starting point as any. What direction are you going with this? Are you focusing on Oedipus specifically, early examples of what could be considered existentialist themes, early examples of "modern" thought- depending on your length and format requirements you could go a few different directions with that...

Honestly, I don't know much about existentialism besides what my cousin (who has studied philosophy, among other things, at UC Berkeley) has summed up for me. basically, from what I understand, existentialism is the idea that we are in control of our own lives, and that any sort of fate or destiny doesn't exist. So, when we were reading Oedipus in class, in the literature textbook mind you, there was an about the author page before the actual story, and it had a quote that said "men is the surest cause of his own adversity" or something like that, which suggested existentialism because it suggests it's our fault shit fucks up, not "fate's" fault. When reading the story, Oedipus chose to kill Laius and it turned out badly for him. He caused his adversity by choosing to kill the man, not fate. So yeah sorry if this sounds incoherent or stupid, I'm still learning, you know. I might say compared to last year I am much smarter simply because I do my homework and pay attention. At least I'm improving I suppose. But yea

isn't the story more centered around the king? Like the king is told that one day his son will kill him and marry his own (the kid's) mother? He abandons the kid still a baby in some remote never to survive land. kid grows up and kills father(not knowing it his father). queen offers her hand to who ever can kill the monster (i forget the name), kid (grown up) kills monster and marries mother(not knowing its his mother)! Orical then laughs all along the way: "Can't escape fate mother fuckers!"
