Oh yeah, that is definitely a characteristic that runs through all of it. It never sounds anything but Real. And Real Big. A three piece can get away with some shit that many heavy music fans don't always understand. One less guitar means lots more space.
It also helps that they have pretty much always had the most badass rhythm sections around. A revolving door of really excellent bass players, and of course Dale. Fucking. Crover.
Listening most of yesterday to the old stuff actually made me realize that before i went to Damon Che School, i was definitely struck solidly across the dome with the Dale Crover University curriculum. Actually, it also reminds me, that the very first 'real' band i played in(which i poasted one track of in that 'the year was...' thread) only wrote two songs. The one i poasted, and one we only ever called "The Melvins Song".

It struck me earlier listening to A Senile Animal on 'phones, like, in parts I don't think the guitar was double-tracked as such, it was just hard-panned dual-mono for texture with it being otherwise up the center along with the bass. The drum imaging with the two drummers is neat as all hell, with the hard-panned kicks and snares and the toms panning in toward the center. The stuff is done up brilliantly, not "produced" as such, just, like, big ugly ogresounds, really well recorded. Which is totally cool in my book- this is mean enough as it stands; trying to gloss it up would diminish it.
Having gotten back into the doomulus metallus for wont of things to do lately (even if we don't have a "real" drummer ATM- studio project and my collaborator is a fine drummer on his own) I totally get the three-piece thing. I prefer it for that creatively. I like the nutjob rhythm section under pounding sludgeriffs. It's an underexploited noise.

You are not the first person I've heard cite the Metallica thing here.
And you might hear the comparison again someday... Contradictions Collapse is forever the Meshuggah album that 'sounds like Metallica' - true, but not a sufficient description of the album IMO.

Nirvana - Bleach. It doesn't always seem popular to like Nirvana but I like em, good noisy fuzzy stuff. I do really like the guitar toanez on tracks such as negative creep.

Nirvana kicks all kinds of ass.
Kurt was a dood who had a good eclectic set of influences, who also had a pretty okay brainbattle going on between the pretty and the ugly sounds.
Bleach is filthy rough radness(plus Occasional Dale Crover!), Nevermind is as close as they got to sucking(which wasn't very close), and In Utero is actually quite awesome on all fronts.

If you only ever own two nirvana records it has to be in utero and bleach.

I'm enjoying this. Nice guitar tone.
Sardo, is that album any good? I only have their Horehound album, which is pretty good.

That is fucking beautiful and awesome.
Though, IMO, it is highly unlikely that he will ever come up with a better getup than the clock one.
