Moving Pictures is an excellent record; probably their most accessible. Of things since, I really like Vapor Trails, actually. I guess it got remixed/remastered? 'Cause it was a notorious Loudness War casualty, but the songs were quite good.

They step outside the idiom at times and I think that's part of the reason for their success. Floyd did it; in a more modern context Radiohead or NIN, or Tool, or even Opeth or Porcupine Tree. Things Musicians Like, perhaps, but not the fusion-shred that gets called progressive rock now. Rush is an interesting case re: the lack of guitar-shredding whilst the rhythm section throws down.

Good progressive rock, to me, is just making weird-ass rock. Stop jamming, write a cool song, be different.

I found this cool ass band... they sound like an instrumental Opeth, very much unashamedly built from that band's mold. But I don't hear some of the things that have turned me off of their newer stuff.

Look who did the session drums. Not only do you get raping drums if you hire him, you automatically get attention from drum nerds.

It's been pretty mild here as well. You'd forget it's Buffalo and mid-winter, and we're on the bad side of the lake. Hell, it was raining earlier and the snow's melted. Granted the city proper usually isn't that bad; it's south of here that gets slammed. The city is just very, very windy and cold, usually. Thread idea...

It hit 70 here today. Fucking nuts because it's 34 outside right now.

And that an interesting voice is just one of those things that someone either has, or doesn't.

ALSO. Multitasking one-armed drummer is understatedly badass.

Excellent girlvoice? Check. Thumpy? Check. Nicely atmospheric? Check. Hammond organ? Check. Noise guitar? Check.

After one listen, I immediately sent it to my not-actually-my-sister, to whom I should credit you for pointing at St. Vincent, really. (She was peripherally aware, and then I sent her Paris Is Burning, not because it's representative so much but because it would get her attention.)

Probably the most excellent slice of hardcore/grind I have ever heard.
