From my perspective, that really highlights why modern F1 is so boring. That is like twenty years of near absolute homogeneity at the end.

This season has been far from boring! The designs have largely gone that way due to safety concerns specifying certain parameters (thus the weird dropped noses this season). Losing Senna and Ratzenberger in the same weekend in 94 was quite the wake up for the sport and there hasn't been a fatality since. A test driver had a terrible accident this week which people are struggling to understand. She basically sped up and collided with one of their trucks. Poor lass had severe head injuries and has lost an eye

To put it into perspective this was the crash that killed Senna. Pretty tame in the scheme of things.


And Robert Kubica walked from this some 13 years later. I watched this live and thought he was gone for sure.


There are still some very cleaver and unique designs out there, for example last year people were running forward facing exhausts and there have been all sorts of crazy ways to steer the air flow to maximise the rear diffuser effect. This year Mercedes have a system which pipes air from the rear wing all the way down the chassis to the front wing which allows them to stall the wing on straights to reduce drag when they don't need the down force. They also use a split vain diffuser on the front wing to control the airflow over the wing in corners to produce extra downforce on the unloaded wheel to reduce lock ups and tire degradation from the wheel sliding in medium speed corners. In a sense the all the cool shit isn't as obvious as it once was. Red bull racing have made a theoretical car that they could make if the rules were relaxed and its so fast its pretty much undrivable. Simulations put it at doing the Nordschleife in about 3 minutes. The track record is 6:48. Next year they're changing things up to use 1.6L turbo charged engines so there will be some interesting designs touted when they come in.

Yarr, for whatever reason the whole pursuit of hundredths of a tenth of a second doesn't quite do it for me the way F1 is presented/arranged.

You know, it is interesting, i might actually find straight up solo time trials more interesting for that sport. I mean, my favorite motorsport(rally) is essentially only that...

I have never been much of a big fan of when the field of competition becomes so tightly homogenized that victory comes down to like 90% getting pole position, getting out first, and managing ones tire/fuel consumption, or failing that, hoping that someone in front crashes out or has a mechanical failure. It is almost like the actual competitive, driving, nature of the sport becomes diminished. It is more about resource management than about the violent interaction of mechanical devices and paved surfaces. And if that is to be the game, then i would still prefer proper endurance races, like Nordschliefe 24hr or LeMans or whatever.

The thing for me is, that most motorsports where multiple cars take to a well-kept track at once, don't actually, in my opinion, benefit terribly well from having all of the cars identical. It is nice as a sort of Champions League/DriverVsDriver-centric gimmick thing like the old Trans Am series, and rally, with its wildly variable track surfaces, can get away with it also. But in the modern era of drivers who train on computers so that they can drive like robots, and cars that have computers controlling traction and suspension, i feel like too many autosports are set up for a boringly surgical race environment.

For sure though, i am pretty picky/silly about what motorsports i can get into. I only really like maybe three out of all of the flavors available.
