Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
Regardless of anyone's opinion of this band, this dude's vocals sound more angry than most anything my ears have heard. I mean, WHATTHEFUCK. Check dat quasigrindage.

Re: What Are U Listening To Right Now: Home Surgery Instruct
The popularity, at the time, of Slipknot, Mudvayne and the like really, really surprised me. As someone who listened to European metal in general and a lot of melodeath in the late '90s, which was, save for the vocals, pretty poppy. That was some brutal stuff, and it was accepted by audiences who wouldn't have touched the underground DM scene. My friends and I mostly ignored it because we felt their fans were white trash or jock assholes, mostly. Reading interviews with the bands in guitar mags, they seemed like they were influenced by decent stuff; by the time I'd heard enough of them to determine they weren't as shitty as I initially thought, I was going in different enough directions what they did didn't interest me.
This is a heavy tune by a heavy band. And the older I get, the more I and my Reformed Orthodox Metalhead friends realize how stupid the metal scene is toward bands that achieve commercial success. If these guys were nobodies without the masks, they would have received a lot more respect from that scene. We always dug Metallica, even the '90s stuff; my friend I bass for likes St. Anger and Lulu (I feel the former sounds like unfinished demos and like the latter) for their intentional ugly lo-fi hate and connects with what they're on about. And we thought they were completely disrespected, even though they always had this weird, almost artsy DGAF thing going on in re: how and what they wrote, made intentionally ugly-sounding albums on occasion and just did whatever in the face of convention and had a hella lotta balls for a band with OTT mainstream commercial success. And I don't think it's historical revisionism; I was there for most of that (being a kid for the "classic" stuff- and that was oddball, taken in context) and that was my take on it. We grew really disenchanted with that scene even though we still listened to the music, because we felt those people championed orthodoxy and shat on being different or creative while claiming to be some sort of rebels. I don't know if that's changed, though I think the younger generation has pushed it out a bit.
And hell, the Tiamat record Geoff posted at the top of the page- they started off as a black metal band. Having hit play, they're still doing the gothic rock thing. Which I am totally cool with. But that is probably an "acceptable" thing for metallers to do. It's still OTT drama-dark without the emo connotations (nu-metal saw similar disrespect for its content.) of more recent generations.

Pretty fucked up.
Diamanda has such a fucked-up voice. From coloratura soprano squalling from the flames of Hell to female baritone growling out the collective sorrows of hugemanatee.. As I've said before, I would love to hear her do a duet with Tom Waits, piano four hands for accompaniment- she shreds on keys- and nothing else, playing the darkest of all possible blues.

That, i am not as into. Sounds like they are trying hard to recapture some vibes and riffs from their classic records, but that is all it sounds like to me.
The best part about it, IMO, is Flo Mounier, who is still completely amazing as shit.

My Occasional Metal Collaborator came over today, and whilst we were geektalking, he recommended me this; he preordered the thing and loves it. I am about to put it on and give it a shot. I've heard one song. It's cool. We'll see where it goes:
Not metal, apparently, by the by. Noiserawk. We had Future Of The Left on and that's what got him to bring it up. It's Wes Borland, of Limp Bizkit fame. I like the stuff he did with Crystal Method (whom I heart) so I will give this a shot.

Not a record, but a guy talking about a record:
This is actually really cool. He has a lot of good shit to say.

Fucking awesome. Production (Cam, I am looking at you here) is snaxcellent, too. Yes, even in this Youtube version (this one is actually decent without the usual Youtube shite) it is obviously quality.
The whole record is brilliant. Kicked massive ass live too. Thank you, Mr. Chris, for this one. Loves it.

"Slight bowel movements preceded the bloodless coup. Though no one must know it, i am at fault."
He just knows how to start a fucking lyric, you know? Makes me wonder what the hell runs through his mind 24/7. Stories, or just random fragments?
