Well, this is interesting. I like the noise and dissonance angle. Devoid of songs, and mostly lacking anything I'd describe as "riffs" (generally, my favorite aspect of metal), but also lacking spastic changes out of nowhere, which are a turnoff in my world. I'd probably be bored out of my skull seeing this live, which is a damn shame as the vocalist has just about the finest hats/headgear going that I've seen on a stage. But as a murky wall of noise on headphones, I could put this on occasionally.

Yarr, i find it pretty hard to listen to as i would other metals. But i fucking love what they are doing, even if i don't necessarily love listening to it. It is an odd combo.

(See also: Metal Machine Music, Glenn Branca, Merzbow, etc.)

I'm digging this. I'm liking the drum sound- and drum production, oddly, quite a lot here. I like the (very big and reverberant) space everything sits in. I don't normally like this sort of shiny quasi-black metal, but this is cool. Behemoth is generally good though. Not something I'd listen to a ton of, but it doesn't suck, and I don't hate the sound of it like most modern metal records.

Yeah man, ain't that shit wild? I've only heard the title track and one other tune but I thought they were pretty nutty sounding. I am not entirely sure how behind it I am, because I liked how overly huge the drum sound has been on the last couple releases, but this new sound is very interesting at the least.

^I have never heard this, but it is kind of rad.

At first i thought it was going to be kind of not-my-bag like porcupinetree/opeth/newprogwhatever. But it is to my ears, much more along the lines of something like early king crimson, or early genesis. Then with a reasonably solid dose of what sounds like late nineties mathrock or something that is sprinkled throughout. Sections that sound like portishead or something with the bass/drums. Some very modern sorts of mixing choices for 1991, as well, the way things are compressed and arranged, seems almost like parts of it were built on a computer, which i don't honestly know if anyone had that ability/hardware in 1991.

Pretty cool for something i have never heard. One of those things. I *should* have heard it before, wifout a doubt.

It is a serious cobbled-together-from-random-bits piece, the whole thing. There's sections where the players had no idea what they were playing on, lots of random improvisations, and the whole thing's an edit job from start to finish. As for the actual recording medium, all I've found so far is a brief mention of "emerging digital technologies", which I don't think necessarily means a primitive DAW; more likely a Sony 3348 or similar digital tape machine. I vaguely remember there being a thread about this on the Electrical Audio forum, but all I'm remembering off the top of my head is the use of a pair of Neumann M49s for everything, and moving stuff around in the room to get the proper sense of space. :idk:

It's also a seriously good sounding record.

And there's a contrabass clarinet on there. So it gets a lot of extra points in my book for that, having at least one goofballs piece of instrumentation.

I am tempted to track down the Rock Band stems for this to assemble a proper non-Youtube listening version.
