Re: What i have been doing today...
SO LET IT BE WRITTEN. SO LET IT BE DONE. Handlemaking went easy once i decided just to chop up an old pool cue and glue a doorknob to the end.

Re: What i have been doing today...
Eventually i will probably do another one that is thicker and leads into the socket a bit better. But that is mostly because i think it looks better that way. This one is totally usable as is.

Re: What i have been doing today...
I'd say that's passable. A bit plainspoken in keeping with your style, but not inelegant. Good work.

Re: What i have been doing today...
This got here today too! I guess that is becoming my thing. "Uh yeah, i collect, specialize mainly in late nineteenth century gigantic-ass tools." This particular one is kind of amazing. Only needed a bunch of sharpening and the rest of it is set up to fucking go. Ultimate flatterizer shit. I may clean up certain parts and i may fixreplace the busted handle, but it really doesn't need anything done to it for any flatterizing processes.

Re: What i have been doing today...
I meant the "LET IT BE WRITTEN, LET IT BE DONE." Though, I've just realized that is also in Creeping Death.

Re: What i have been doing today...
Actually. I was quoting THE BIBLE. Nah, just kidding, i wouldn't do a thing like that. It is just the sort of thing that i tend to bellow when brandishing a gigantic murderhammer slab of sharpened old steel.

Re: What i have been doing today...
I was quoting Creeping Death myself. But that's a fine thing to bellow if one needs to bellow a thing. I like the other apparatus you acquired as well, whatever it is. A flatterizer, as I don't know it's proper name. Henry, perhaps. It appears to be a plane of some sort? Much as The Other Thing is a Big-Ass Chisel. You should replace the brokenhandle with an actual pistol grip.

Re: What i have been doing today...
Its proper name is a Number 7 Jointer plane, but i don't know what it prefers to go by. I was looking for a #5 (14" long) or #6 (18" long), but this one popped up and looked nice for the types of things that i look for in these sorts of things so i got it. Even though it is a kind of massive 22" long. I just determined that this particular one was probably made in either 1929 or 1930. The blade is newer than that though. This beast is what one would use to make things flat that need to be flat: tabletops, doors, things that were going to be glued together, whatever. At first i thought it was fucked up because i had it on the kitchen table and it looked like the bottom of the plane was curved like a banana. But then i checked it with a real straight edge, and it is way superflatproperflat. So i guess my kitchen tabletop is actually bent like a banana. Which is funny, because it isn't obvious. Which, as an aside is just another one of those things. How straight does a thing need to be? How in time does a thing need to be? How tight to pitch does a thing need to be? Answer: nowhere near as close as we all think. Having the ability to measure and correct these things isn't something that is useful to us.

Re: What i have been doing today...
Well, to a point. The master bedroom at my parents' house slopes down 3/8"-1/2" over four feet at one point, and it's only really noticeable over the bare floor. With the carpet, no one ever knew. But my dad has to put some sort of shit on the underlayment layer we threw down to make the oak going over the top even; otherwise it's out of spec for the interlocking oak bits.

Re: What i have been doing today...
I would call it "Clyde" That is fine craftsmanship in that big ass murder chisel. Those others as reference look to be the Gibson of chisel handles with the flamed maple etc...

Re: What i have been doing today...
I like Chris's handle. There is elegance in its simplicity. It's functional with an implication of craftsmanship. This is a tool for using, not looking at. A Functional Object.

Re: What i have been doing today...
I like Clyde. I was having trouble thinking of a name that would fitproper. And those particular flamey maple handles are definitely aftermarket jobbers. There is definitely a certain school of woodworkers(as there is a certain school of guitarists, or hifi collectors, or whatever) who are into a certain sort of thing, and flame maple and inlays and lots of glossy reflectively polished surfaces and whatnot are part of that certain sort of thing. I am not that type of woodworker. This, is the type of stuff that i like: I was reading about slicks some, and it was interesting to note that the guy was saying that a surefire way to determine if a specimen had a non-original handle, was if it was too nice, or made out of nice wood like maple or even ash. It is specifically, the type of tool that a brute would own, and they would see lots of heavy use. Usually the handles would be made of whatever scrap shitwood happened to be lying around the shop or jobsite. Hence, my pool cue (it was bent too much for usability anyhow) here. Actually, if anything, this handle is a little too nice for me.

Re: What i have been doing today...
Arrived today, and, i was surprised to feel, that it is, in some ways, more ridiculous than the slick is: Imma need some trees soon. Some trees to mess up.
