My Focusrite Saffire's the same way. It's fairly weak, and kinda noisy to boot. And the soundstage/imaging isn't that great either. A couple of my friends have MOTU setups and, well, they're okay-ish I guess? :idk: Still not like a proper amp though.

If you have a nice component stereo kicking around, I'd use the amp/receiver from that. Right now I'm using an old Yamaha hi-fi amp for headphone duties at home and a Presonus HP4 at Garda's place, and both sound better than anything I've run into on an interface. Why can't they build a decent headphone section into these things?

Re: Curtis' earbuds- even with all the isolation from the HD280s? Damn.

yeah-- outputting to a denon 65 w hifi amp with a decent can-amp works well for me too-- but i also started using beyer in-ears for tracking. wish they had a longer cord-- but the isolation is rockin, and with 24 ohms impedance- you're about on the money for non horrible volumes.

i actually went looking to see if i could find any reason why the amp is SO weak into studio cans with teh saffire, and focusrite says 'its so it's always clean and never distorts'. :/ sounds kinda like a cop out to me... but i suppose if you just want raw volume, you can go to some POS behringer 4 channel headphone amp for tracking... which is what i think most people do anyhow. i know i do :D sitty five bux of poopy loud sounds. hell.. it's tracking, right?

 I think you are correct on that one. It's cheap and it's loud. I know I've run into 'em before. And since most home setups are one-room affairs anyhow, loud in a room with a blasting amp or a drum kit is first- probably only- priority for a headphone mix.

And yeah, Focusrite's response does sound like a bit of a cop out there. The little 1/3 rackspace Presonus HP4 is an observably superior amp- it has the advantage of actually sounding good, too- and it doesn't break up even at punishing volumes. And it's built sturdily, too. (Metal knobs 'n everything) I found it for real cheap on Craigslist and it turned out to be a pretty nice score. And it has a "mono" button, if you're using it for mixing and are inclined to check in mono. (Also useful for live work as our drummer's monitor rig.)

And to Geoff, re: stuff that lights up- this guy: :red: if you engage the pad and the boost at the same time.

Yes, there must be a way to not engage them both at the same time. For instance, a switch, that goes: -20db, bypass, active boost.

I saw what you said. I was just being an asshole. :red:

Though the thought strikes me running a 20db pad into a 20db boost and then A/Bing the thing against everything in hard bypass would show you just how clean the circuits are.

Also, on a totally unrelated note, I've been fooling around with the Native Instruments Abbey Road drummer stuff today- I've been on a big Native Instruments kick lately (like Absynth and Kore weren't all over my stuff to begin with...) and they decidedly do not have The Toontrack Sound. We all know that sound. On the shinier side, but they don't have the obvious compressor smack on the hard hits. And the kicks go deeeeeep. I'm not sure on the cymbals yet- SD2 is the versatility king there- but the kicks and snares have some serious balls.

Back to work on my solo rekkid again finally. The lion's share of the electric guitars are done save for some funky Strat rhythms (in retrospect I realize just how much whiteboy funk is all over this thing) and solos.

Well then, as you were.

I figured there was a chance it was legit as it was cartoons and not penis enlargement pills or something.

OK - so the GnR thing is getting big gigs.Matter of fact we were asked to play House of Blues Cleveland the week of GnR's induction to the RnR HoF. So I would have to drive out to Cleveland on Sat, Play, then comeback the next morning. That;s not too bad, the problem is the next morning is Easter. Not that we're religious, but my kids need their dad at home Easter Sunday morning to open their Easter baskets. So they will be using a backup Izzy for the show. I told the band I wouldn't be able to do it, even before asking my daughter, then I asked her, I'm glad I turned it down, I thought she was going to cry when I said I was offered a gig that day.

I just got done blowing a 70 watt Bugera speaker for shits and giggles. Considering I've had the thing for like 5 years and it had tons of little tears and rips in the cone from being pushed way too hard, it took quite some time to actually burn up on an 85 wpc Technics receiver of the vintage that it probably puts out more like 110 wpc. Fun shit.

I think the riffs I wrote may not be in 4/4 as they don't sound right alongside my programmed drums. Problem is I don't understand time signatures at all so I have no idea how to figure out what time sig it is and how to program the drums to fit :panic:
