Preparing to rewire my Pearl today, needs p90s back in it, and 50s wiring. Being Japanese it has skinny pot shafts so I have to drill them out to fit proper CTS pots. This could go terribly wrong.

You talking about the body drilling? Just make sure that you are using a brand new, good quality, sharp, bit and you shouldn't have a problem. Go slowly and you will reduce the chances that the guitar's finish and wood might splinter off. In some cases, applying masking tape over the whole to be made will help keep splintering down.

If the hole doesn't need to be widened by a ton, sometimes i will just use a hand reamer. It can make it easier to control precisely, the diameter of the hole made. And less likely to "get away" from me and fuck up the wood or finish.

Yeah it's not a huge difference. I'm going to use a hand drill because I don't trust myself with a power one especially on my favourite guitar

edit - done, everything went better than expected and took a couple of seconds per hole
