Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Well, the RSM-5 came yesterday. I've gotta a whole fucklot of mics now, and eight stands. I'll get two more as soon as I have the preamp to facilitate two more mics. And I was at GC and quite ridiculously saw a dealsie ass KSM27, $130 with shockmount/barely used. Washington law says I have to put down full payment and THEN wait a whole fucking month before they can release it. I just said fuck it though, I won't even have a whole ton of use for yet another condenser until I have more channels anyways. Shit's a deal, I must as well jump on it. With 2 more channels, I will be able to fuck shit up I am thinkin'. 6 mics on a drum kit, (optional) room mic, 3-4 mics available for amplifiers. Live bass takes will probably take a DI, so I could just optionally go with one mic and a DI and not feel one bit bad about it. That's a pretty damn decent-ish setup for doing what I wish, which is just to justly capture the sound of those instruments in that room. I am buggering the living fuck out of anyone I can talk to about recording their or their friend's band. A couple of possibilities have come up, I need to keep meeting Seattle people as well. ALSO: I would spend today getting together some sweet comparison clips of all these new microphones on multiple sources, but I think I am going to record a song with just MXL2001s to get that experiment Geoff proposed started.. It will be a very funny experiment, because I feel like as I have got to know these mics, I do not much like the sound of them. Their top end is pretty fucking annoying and thin. However, I think they are going to serve well for what I now am using them for in conjunction with my other mics, capturing the body of toms. Anyways, I think the song will be a cover of A Salty Salute by GBV. Atleast it will be properly lo-fi ish.

Dude. You have seriously acquired the recording jones, I see. Having a pair of the 27s will be nice. And for under 300, to boot! I am guessing drum overhead duties for the pair? (Among other things. They're good on, well, stuff. Any stuff.) I'd be really curious to hear a shootout between the 27 and the M179 in cardioid. Obviously the M179 can do all sorts of useful other stuff, but hearing it directly against the Shure would be interesting... And it's funny how often toms wind up getting mic'd with Any Old Shit You Have Laying Around. Whether it's 57s or just whatever. Interestingly, with the M179, 27s and the Oktava (at least, the cardioid SDC capsule), you have mics people use on toms intentionally because they really, really like them for that. Go figure. But yeah, if they're rocking in the overheads... They're not normally a priority track. Unless the drummer's a huge Tool fan or something. Good luck finding bands, BTW. Once you've done a couple things, word of mouth should spread.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Editing drums for the new Garda record, and it strikes me how easily one of the songs that may wind up on there turns into synthpop from guitar rock. It's kind of an aberration for us in that there's no keys at all (live electronic drums though) and two guitars. If I dump my guitar part and play synth on it, it turns into a Goldfrapp/Metric-y thing real, real fast. I will pitch this idea to the band, but I'll have to demo it up (using the studio drum and bass tracks and Chris's guitar) to sell it to them lest it get shot down. Playing along to it on keys- I love having my Novation on my desk right in front of me- I like it better as danceydancey. Not that it doesn't groove already. But it's way more "indie" performed either way than our usual harder thing, so I may err on the side of synth here.

Yeah, probably OHs in most situations. Other LDCs may be swapped in at any given time just to try something out and do new things, but they will probably always be recording brass. I mostly got the other KSM just so I could free up the M179 to serve as whatever the fuck I want it to be. Could be a room mic, additional mic on a cab, schwatever. Also to be noted, The 2001s have a decentish sound TBH, it is just WAY too gnarly for cymbals. Might be fine on acoustic instruments or some other things, it is just the least likely thing I would want to throw on a cab (and as I said OHs) or whatever when I could use them for more suitable and fitting positions. These actually might kick ass for all I know under or on the side of a snare. It's just that I have two of them, and there are two toms to be recorded so I will always group them into that niche. Today, I am finishing this cover.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
not at all Rob - while everything around got completely fucked, we only lost power and interwebs for 24 hours. I can't go anywhere - no gas and work is 25 miles away, I think I can make it to work tomorrow, but after that I'm in bad shape. Many of the people at work lost houses and anything they owned, and my mom, like you, still has no power, my dad also, but he does have a generator. My drummer had one of his kits in a studio that burned down so he lost a lot. He's a Berklee guy been doing drumming a long time, he was crushed about losing some hand picked cymbals. I'm lucky, I'm on the North Shore of Long Island I wasn't close to flooding, just a lot of down trees. This is my mom's back yard, she has a lot of trees and this one is huge and just missed the house.

Damn. You lucked out. I didnt get damaged at all besides having no power. Trying to get gas is going to be a pain in the ass though. I have no inclination to wait 5 hours in line yo fill up my tank.

Decided to push my guitarring abilities by trying to learn Tandem by Protest The Hero. I'm actually managing to pick bits of it up ok, but only at 75% speed It's pretty fun, I enjoy playing this.

I really really hope the hurricanes don't make it up to southern Ontario next year. Climate change is a bitch.

Lamborghini's chief test driver's name is Max Venturi. No joke. That's seriously his name. How awesome is that?

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
If I were writing a screenplay, I'd almost be inclined to use a different name for an Italian sports car test driver, because that does sound a little fictional character-ish. I think it's the "Max" that does it. You're roughly as far inland as I am. We got some middling rain and wind that wasn't anything special- which is roughly what we generally get. But yeah, it's pretty fucked. I may have found a new go-to EQ for drum overheads. It is doing wonders for my snare.
