Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Apparently there will be a new 5w Marshall slash edition (based on the AFD 100) coming out soon. Once again this gets my GAS senses tingling would be perfect if it sounds as good as the full size one. 2 channels, reverb, speaker out and it has a full size v30. Very relevant to my interests. I'm also finally gonna buy a bass amp. not sure whether to just get a budget 30w practice amp or spend an extra £50-60 and go for a 2nd hand 180w ashdown I've seen for sale. I'd like to play with a band but not sure of the likelihood of this actually happening, and don't want such a big amp just sat around doing nothing..

180W really isn't a great deal of power for a bass map anyway so you could well end up with something thats useless for both applications Looks like I'm going to Sweden in march in the name of science.

Ashdown might be a bit underpowered but I did real well with one and I liked type of noise it made. I did a few gigs with it, no problems. I was not chugga chugging though.

Just done a quick 10 miler on my road bike in the snow and I feel like I've had brain freeze for the past 15 minutes, still going strong.

Depending on the band, you might get away with 180w. I'm assuming any band you play with would be on the heavier side of rock, so a loud drummer and a heavy guitar might drown you out.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Really well. They want to start playing shows soon. They cut the album with a drummer, who then left to live in England right after they finished recording, so they picked up a new drummer and found me to flesh out the band. I guess the guitarist dude tracked a bunch of guitar parts on every song off the album, so they need another guitarist for the songs to sound proper live and they have a bunch of new material they want me to write riffs for. I basically just got dropped into a functional band without the frustration of trying to form one, which is really the best part. I hate forming bands, trying to collectively write some base material. The guitarist/singer does all the writing, but he's not like a dictator from what I can tell, so as long as he pumps out tunes I can write riffs over, and we can play shows (and maybe make some cash) I am happy.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Now that I have my regular kit up (which is actually my buddy Landon's kit) I am getting back to getting epic drum sounds again.. Drummer for this band's kit was tuned just alrightish and he was not really a drummer from what I get. He play guitar, and I think started there as he said he's a self taught drummer. Kinda shows, the way he rides certain cymbals.. Shit is a little spazzy and inconsistent in velocity, but was decently enough in time, so whatevz. Cymbals were not much to my liking, but the crash was atleast decent sounding, thin and 16" as he liked to wail on it it looked like. Might have been a problem with a larger sized crash, kinda was with the ride.. As he liked to crash it a whole lot.. Now, finished up the live band section of their band's set, overdubs to be done soon though indefinitely. Redo-ing this Heart Cooks Brain/Out of Gas mashup, already finished the bass and drums earlier. Setup the drums oddly for this session. Didn't put the rack tom backup nor the second crash or second ride I have only just toyed with for a couple days before the band moved their equipment in. Just my Vault crash and in line with the atypicality of the day, the B8 ride I never use. Just ya know, cause. Pretty fun/simple/fast setup, lemme tell ya. Kinda really into it for certain things. With the way it's setup as well, it is sorta maximized for GJ setup.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
If their attitude is receptive- and you're good at tuning a drum kit- it wouldn't hurt to ask to tweak it a bit. At least, if it's something you know you can take care of quickly so people aren't sitting around waiting for too long- and drumfuckery is usually the longest setup. What was he using for a ride? Also, re: the B8 ride, B8s are weird in that they sometimes sound better- or more appropriate on the kit- than "nice" cymbals. I heard one over the summer where the drummer put on his cheap B8 ride (other people playing the kit at a jam/party) vs. the nice Bosphorous he had on there, and honestly, I thought the B8 sounded better on that kit. So it's just kick/snare/floor tom, hats/crash/ride at the moment? Seeing as there's now two MOTU interfaces set up at the 'drome and there's a bunch of preamps besides, we finally got around to re-doing the rehearsal recording setup this past evening, and seeing as the drums aren't being summed to one track in mono anymore, they sound maybe a tiny bit better... It's just D112 inside kick, 58 snare shell, and NT5s as overheads, spaced pair (we took them down from the ceiling and put them on stands- just too damn much bleed) and it actually doesn't sound bad in that room at all, and a reasonably accurate representation of the kit, besides. The guitars, we ran through my ART and in via SPIDF, and for just recording us jamming? Shit sounds pretty excellent.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Shit records like a charm, will share some clips soon.. This whole cover should be done before too long. Uuuuh, to be honest I can't remember? I remember he had ZBT hats and a 16" Thin Crash, but I don't recall the ride. Probably whatever the Zilquivalent of the B8 series. Also to note: I did tune his drums a bit. His snare was tardloose and I got it to the point where it was.. PLAYABLE and then tightened it a little bit beyond that. It was still pretty loose and sounded as such, so I made sure not to betray the band's sound. They are also a garage rock band with a sloppy/lofi feel, so I figured tuning the toms seemed silly, TBH.

Also, really: One does not really need a capable DJ when one has a mouth, an SM58 and an imagination.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
total bizarreness.
the cat who used to put out my old band's records in the 90's asked if we might reform for shits and grins, and play a show or two for his 40th b-day. last we played was 1997.
strangely, a conversation's occurring, and even though i live a half continent away from those guys.. we might actually give it a whack.
wut.
so usually not into the whole 'dino-reunion' thing.. 'course, i never felt like a dino before.. what a mindfuck. despite thinking 'who the fuck is gonna care?'-- i still think it'd be kinda fun, and it'd be good to see those guys, who i do only about once a year or two.
this a bad idea?

No, it would be a bad idea for me to reform my badmetal band. Your band was actually really good, and that sounds like fun.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
yes go for it. I have guy who used to work for one of my colonial times bands begging me to upload the material so he can hear it again. Luckily I think at this point it is only on cassette and I do not have a contraption that would extract this noisy metal.
