Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I have increasingly been wanting one of these though: When i first met the thing i felt it was conceptually just ludicrously OTT, but after you work a bit with some big tree timber, the shit all of a sudden starts to make a fucklot of good sense.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I think it is what is technically referred to as a "giant-ass chisel".

I can't think of a much better term. Alternately, I'll call it Theodore and leave it at that.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Its other name is a "timber framers slick".
Because of how slick it is.
There are all kinds of slicks, timber framers, boatmakers, coopers, etc.
They are all essentially varying shades of giant-ass chisel.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
You should take up blacksmithing while you're at it.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Admittedly, it was originally for the purpose of setting cartoon style traps. But over the years the desire became less nefarious.
And yet at the same time, somehow... moreso.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I've heard it isn't as expensive as you would imagine to start blacksmithing, but I imagine a proper anvil an forge would be pretty fucking pricy unless you built the forge yourself.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
A real smithing anvil is pretty fucking steep on the pricescale. There are lots of cheap cold anvils available, but a proper one that can take forging type abuse, is a whole other jibjab.
The forge, there are all kinds of options for. Shit, i would rock a pair of bellows if i had to.
Around here, i suppose the bigger issue might be the noise. Considerably worse than drums. I don't think i could pull it off in this neighborhood, really.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I couldn't speak for the forge, but I've seen anvils before at flea markets and the like. I don't know how proper they'd be as they weren't particularly large. I'm no expert on the subject by any means, so I don't know what specifically the requirements would be.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Theere are two main anvil flavors. A cold anvil, is cheap and common. It used to be common to have them in the workbench area, useful like a vise. Mainly they are for using on cold metals. Banging things into shape, looseningfittings by wailing on them, that sort of thing. Less common, and more pricy, would be a actual smithing anvil. They are huge, and usually made of hardened steel, IIRC. Made specifically for hitting melty metal upon. I have no idea what they might go for used, but a cheapy would be like $400. Shipping them is the real killer tho.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
The shipping cost on a large anvil would be a bitch. I know when I've looked into sizeable mixing consoles for a reasonable price the shipping is usually a bitch- if you can have the thing shipped at all. Anvils, I assume, would be no better. These are the kind of things that qualify as freight. The anvils I've seen have likely, then, been the cold anvil sort. I've thought about purchasing them in the past simply as unusual décor.

I really need to be less shitty at singing and many other things. Like, being able to keep time proper would be super dope.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Ah, but then I check out yesterday's stuff and it is actually pretty good sounding on the vocal front pitch-wise. So I don't know what's up, must have been a good day because I can't even reach that part of my voice now. The notes just aren't there, it is kind of nutsy.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
It happens. Wear from use. Give it a day or two. I had rehearsal yesterday and I have a session on Thursday, and I don't have quite the range I normally do, and it needs to get some warmup to really be presentable if I've beat on it- a little pitchy without compared to rock-solid out of the box the day after. I'll give it a rest minus some exercises. I tend to be throaty/screamy/raspy for rockstuff, so my voice'll get knackered pretty quick. I really need proper lessons to help with that. But it is a normal phenomenon. I've found it does/can reinforce the low end at the expense of the top or anything more gentle sounding. At least, with my voice and poor technique. No way I am going to squeak out the high notes today.
