Ordered myself one of those import Musicman Sterling 5-string Stingrays. Because I could use a 5-string bass, and they seem to be well-built and sound more-or-less like a Stingray should. We'll see how this works out when it arrives. :snax:

I'm used to heavy instruments, so that shouldn't be an issue. Considering I tune down to D or B half the time with a bass anyhow, the 5-banger is useful. Having a fretted 5 as part of the band arsenal will likely come in handy as well- one of us will eventually play it live for something Garda related, and on the off chance I am bassing for someone else, there is generally metal involved, which means low notes. Win all around.

Gotta say, having a couple of 'Rays around in Garda kinda got me hooked on the things. Aggressive toan, they have.

Think I finally figured out how to mic an amp to get "the tone that I hear in my head". It's kind of been right under my nose the whole time, I've just avoided it because I didn't think it was gonna do the thing for me. :red:

Come on now, I'm not a moron. :O

57 on the crease.. With a condenser on the cone side back a ways with the phase aligned. :O

Admittedly that's about as conventional as you can get with more than one mic, so I can see why you'd expect it to be meh or otherwise not deliver the goods you were looking for. It's not clever, it's not creative, it's not really interesting at all, and the only trick- admittedly a decent one- is getting the phase right. Frankly, it's kind of a pain in the dick. It does actually work pretty well though.

As far as I can tell there's no real magic to getting the phase right, it's really just a matter of moving the condenser around until it doesn't sound fucked up. Experience tells me the room itself probably factors into this? But I can't pin down any one factor. Live/dead, big/small, doesn't really seem to factor into it. Normal modern house rooms with fairly thick carpet and drywall seem to pose issues, but those seem to sound like ass to record anything in anyhow.

The more recoarding-minutia-lazy hermits among us might just drag the wav back a touch so the shit sounds right. :red:

Getting mic/phase positions right without an available mic mover slave is a PITD i seem to have decided that i don't have time for. :red:

There are some situations where a wall or somesuch will be bouncing some real rough out of phase shit back into the mic no matter what, but wav dragging seems to work about 90% of the time for my (admittedly ghetto) porpoises.

You are a luckier man than I. I might just be cuss'd with wonky reflections in Chris-from-Garda's map room* though- it's the sort of room one should avoid at all costs. But, it does have a shitload of nice maps/pedals/fiddles contained therein, so we wind up recording there fairly often. Too much shit to fit in his car, basically.

Wav dragging does wonders for tightening up an amp + DI track on bass though. If there are weird reflections on your bass DI, I'm not sure what to tell you. :hypno:

Mic moving is a lot easier when recording with other peepholes, though. Whoever isn't playing gets to be Mic Bitch.

*- It really should be called the Map Room. It sounds strategically vital.

Damn. A friend of mine just scored a Red Bear MK120 head and matching 4x12 for $56 from GC. He went there to pick up strings and walked out the door with that. They said it didn't work. Works fine, scratchy pots, apparently. Not a bad deal for a Russian-made JCM 800 2203 equivalent.

those amps kinda don't sound much like jcm's at all to mine ears. my bandmate had one in posession for two weeks back when you could buy them brand new, and it went back 'cause it was impossible to dial in without stupid cavernous bass. i dunno if it was broken, but it seemed like it was, because it was a vast fart. by itself, it sounded fantastic. big, roundish, fat harmonics, loud as balls. in a band? evaporated in a cloud of BOHHHHHHHHHHHH.. and no definition. and theres really not much to dial in.. i mean.. it's a SIMPLE amp. i remember turning the bass OFF and it still dwarved a laney aor100. that amp had SO much bass it was silly.

i 'spect they're big doom amps.. but for rock.. unless that one was super broken... gah.. impossible.

but lemme know what he thinks of it. hopefully we had one that was just all kindsa wrong, and his is great! fifty six bucks?! damn.. use it as a bass amp for that!

The new bass arrived. I have been bassing. I'm enjoying the neck and string spacing, which is pretty comfortable for a five. Sounds like a Musicman. I wish I had my Sansamp at home.

So some random guy on soundcloud offered to sing over my music. He sent me a couple of quick demos and he actually sounds awesome. Hopefully he won't flake (as is tradition) because I'm pretty excited we could actually get something good going here if I re-record everything with better production and stuff. See what you think https://soundcloud.com/hernanconidi/set ... mo/s-SIQDu

I've pretty much given up trying to get a "real" band going so this might be my best option haha.

I would say that is much more like it, for sure. Cut back(way back) on the vocal reverb, and i think that could def work.

Yeah it's heading in the right direction I just hope he commits to it. Those are just some quick things he sent me, hopefully I can get him to send me dry vocal tracks to put in my reaper project and learn how to produce better.
