That is what I have heard as well! I will be sure to report back my findings. I'm hoping I can also get good use out of it on a cab beside a ribbon.

Also, this one belonged to Sam Pura and has a fucking orange screen.

Good lord. I played through a Marshall JMP 2104 last night at practice (2x12 combo) and it sounded fucking incredible. Way better than my Laney could ever hope to sound. Its the tone ive always wanted. I'm now on a quest to buy one for myself. Someone on a UK forum is selling his recently serviced model with original speakers (hopefully the g12 65s) which I intend to buy if I can get my shit sold :)

agreed.. JMP is stupid fucking good.

On another note, I have been passing time between damn cover bands so long, I have lost myself.

So I joined an original band. I am lead guitar, and they sought me out. flattering in a way, but after watching a video of said band you will say say... oh, yeah that's why....

will post current video soon, meanwhile they just started laying tracks for he new recording so I am thrown in the fire.

The 65s are stupid fucking good, as well. :tu: Other guitarist in my band has a quad of originals in a beat-up old Marshall cab. It gets used a lot. Tracked almost the whole of the dirty parts on my solo record through it a while back. A fine rockspeaker, that.

And yeah, the JMPs themselves are nice amps, if a little on the really loud side. The inefficiency of the 65s (or Greenies; those'll do the trick, too) helps mitigate that some. Had a 2204 for a few years, gigged it a bunch, but it was a bit too much sometimes to really get it to sound its best. Which, being an old Marshall, means pretty well cranked.

yeah my Marsnall (if you remember the pics) was great sounding, but never gigged. matter of fact it never left the house until it was sold. Little lady said it was the best sound she ever heard, but she was on a different floor... so fucking loud.

Just ordered another DBX 166, but the original version without any letters after the model number as well as a 163x. They are so darn cheap it is hard to not get a little crazy with it. :red: Really though, this is probably the route I should be going in terms of committing to compression and getting some analog goo on stuff before it hits the computer. I'll also be saving on CPU power and simplifying my workflow a bit.

Yeah, there have to be literally a million used 166s out there from live sound rigs. I've heard the older colored-knob version is "better", but that may just be the Internet talking- I don't know what the difference is, sonically, between the two. It may just be the usual "older gear is better" syndrome you see, which reminds me of the metalhead "their first album is the best one" thing.

I actually prefer the little 163X to my 1176 for beating up snare drums. :hypno: It has a pretty distinctive sound that seems to be pretty characteristic of the DBX 160-series compressors. 'S pretty fine on toms as well, especially as I usually mutilate the close mics on toms anyhow. Not subtle. Very punchy.

Re: CPU/workflow, I've found the same thing. Less work on the back end. A big pile of hardware has me liking mixing more- and I always liked mixing to begin with- and hating tracking less. It's a rather old-school, wore an onion on my belt approach and contrary to Internet Wisdom™, but having the ability to compress and EQ stuff going in and commit to a sound (and not being afraid to fuck with it later as necessary) does simplify things.

I may have gotten the best drum sound I've ever managed earlier. Same drummer as last time, though on his record, not mine. Alt/indie singer-songwriter melodic rock things. Swapped out the Ludwig snare for a shallower wood Spaun. We were referencing an Old 97s record and kinda nailed it. Even though it's a finicky beast, I do love my big old Yamaha console full of transformer and inductor goodness.

Mic setup, for the geeks:
Kick in: Shure SM7B
Kick sub: homebrew sub
Snare top: Blue Baby Bottle
Snare bottom: Rode NT5
Rack toms: Sennheiser MD421s
Floor tom: AKG D112
OHs: AKG C3000s in Glyn Johns (measured!) setup
Hats: Shure SM57- I really like this as a hat mic
Room: Rode NT5, about 40 feet distant
Ass mic: Sennheiser MD21 into Sansamp VT Bass

Will report back further as things develop. I'll be bassing, pianoing, and Hammonding on this as well.

-goes to check if the one Snax sold me is that one... it is-

Yeah. It did good on snare. My own summation of the result: phat.

:nods: I like that li'l thing enough I bought two of them when I had cash dollars again. It gets used. I usually aim for about 6dB gain reduction for harder rocksounds. Punches like a fist.

Vaguely related: I think the SM7B might be my favorite kick mic these days. It takes the punishment, and passes the punishment on to you. It's not hyped/scoopy like the typical kick-oriented mic, but it captures solid lows, and that stuff's so dependent on the individual drum and tuning anyhow. Given my recent hardware fetish, I figure I can just EQ it on the console or, failing that, my big stupid mastering EQ. FWIW, this most recent session, I think I boosted 3dB at 100hz and 3.5k. Thing hits like a fist, because of a well-tuned kit and a slamming drummer. Blend in homebrew sub for extra subbiness, and Bob's your oyster, the world's your uncle... Or is that the other way around? :dukes:
