Post funny/sad memory just came up
So way back when napster was the cool thing to do, I would frequently go to my friend's house, and we would literally just sit around his computer and download bad music.
Then came the day that we discovered the chat rooms, and ventured forth.

Being the mildly pubescent preteens that we were, we decided it would be super awesome if we convinced everybody in the chatroom that we were a super ripped dude on the beach, fucking some girl, with a laptop on her back. Conversations like this would always pause every 5-10 minutes or so, when we thought it would be hilarious to claim that we had an orgasm... not that we knew what that was. We did it anyway. Thats the funny memory.

Sad memory: people believed us.

I remember when i first discovered IRC clients, and i was shit scared that logging into a server meant that some superhacker would be able to take over my computer.

I also remember that i started out looking for cracked video games, but wound up completely nerding out on tech/hacker/phreaking informational stuff instead. :red:

hahahhaha yeah i was with ya.

mIRC scared the fuck out of me. So did ICQ. Mind you, i never ended up getting ICQ, my age group latched onto MSN messenger when it came out, i was 10 at the time. Hell, MSN is the reason im a good typer today. Though, lots of my friend's older siblings used ICQ for a while before moving to MSN.

I think they got tired of the "uhoh" sound every time you got a message.

Ahhh, Napster. I downloaded a lot of individual songs this way. I recall sometimes a person would call their band something popular like 'Korn' to get downloads, and my dumbass friends wouldn't realize it wasn't the actual band...

Yeah, they did that to a lot of slipknot songs too. Later i would find out that they were actually by a band called Bleeding Throuhg.

I think I legitimately got into some bands that way. If I remember right, that's how I found Hypocrisy [Their cover of Black Metal was labeled as the original. For about a month I was convinced that it really WAS Venom and they were tuning down to A all the way back in 1982. Hey, in my defense, I was 14.] There's some other bands, I can't remember what. Nothing labeled as Korn or Slipknot, though. I was already sick of that stuff by the time I was using Napster.

Hehe. I went into high school being a nu metal fan. Mind you I only listened to the GOOD nu metal (commence people loling at the concept of 'good nu metal')... but a year or two in I started to transition into other metals.

When i was in high school, practically none of the music i liked was ever on servers. No polka, no lounge, no 80s hardcore/punk. This is possibly largely the reason that i started using the internets as a information gathering vector rather than a goods collecting one.

Well. That and my supersweet 56k connection. I didn't go to even a remotely quick home internet connection until real late, like 2006?

I was pirating games since Starcraft and Diablo 1.

So that is what? 1998?

I was pirating games when I was 10 years old.

Me too. Man, I spent so much time playing Starcraft. It's a wonder I was able to learn to play guitar at the same time.
