I used to do this at my cats when I had cats. It added some amusement to the annoyance of having to yell at one's critters.

Chances are they ate it in the middle of the night and have already came down.

I've always found it takes a longer time to get over the high if it is ingested. It's a slow climb and a slow descent. With that said though, they may have never metabolized the THC in the first place, if it didn't come in contact with any solvents that can absorb it during digestion. In this case you could probably smoke their droppings.
