Thank you, all. I expect Snaxie's coming out as a transwoman and medically remedying her condition is about as shocking as... Well, a really not-at-all shocking thing, even to people I know primarily over the Internet. It was a little obvious. :snax:

Though my singing voice has changed to the point of being unrecognizable. And I'd trained up that poor disused bottom octave so well, too. Twere I ever to get back on a stage, I suppose I could really confuse people with some nice octave jumps if I wanted to. On the plus side, voice training equals more range, and being a singer helps with this particular issue.

Current musical thoughts are how much I can abuse or am abusing drum kit parts, specifically metal-influenced stuff, double kick, blast beats, and the like, in orchestral works. I don't really know of other composers doing that, so there's really no established precedent, and since it's clearly not straight-up metal, they are an effect. All I have to go on here is, well, metal, and metal employs those all the time. There's a century of precedent for adding jazz-flavored percussion. Metal, not so much. Oddball reverse influence there; usually it's metal influenced by classical works. I don't want to overuse it.

That being said, having a kit player among the percussion section makes for some nice accents when you need things to hit really hard. Between timpani, concert bass drum, kick drum, and floor tom? That's a pretty big bang from just three players. (Add an extra if you'd like; timpani + 3 isn't at all uncommon. That gives you both hand cymbals and a crash on the kit to throw in there, too, for a six-piece bit of obnoxiousness. Or seven, if you want a chord on the timpani.) Clearly this is not a thing one should do frequently, as it will lose its impact.

Also, whether to leave all snare parts to the kit player, include two snares on the kit- one a more typical concert snare- or do interesting things with two snares. Or just have the the percussion section divide it up amongst themselves as is preferred practice. Just write the parts; timpani is always played by a specialist. Let them divide up as necessary. Though I think with drum kit involved, that's also a specialist thing, particularly if it's going throughout, or mostly, it will have the same player. Things to think about.

It's really not much different than producing rock records; the thought process is essentially the same in terms of combination of tones and timbres. Just different tools. I've been deliberately avoiding scoring for electric guitar, though, even if I often use one to write as it's convenient, particularly for string parts. It's essentially a fretted horizontal cello in terms of range, if not what's playable as double/triple/quadruple stops. It's become a matter of course for me to write string parts on things with strings rather than a keyboard instrument so I understand how they can, y'know, actually be played. Keys/piano is great for visualizing harmony, but not so much for what's practical. Thankfully I've played enough things and read enough scores over the years to have a good sense of what's workable, I think, though I still consult standard orchestration reference books (Piston and Adler in particular) when necessary.

Pulled the damn trigger on a Universal Audio X8P interface.. something I don't think I'd have the courage to do without Sweetwater's financing program.

Was about time to upgrade from my very, very modest Tascam US-1800. Very fucking excited for this box, this new generation that just came out has the exact specs I was hoping to come around in a high quality box. 8 internal preamps and then atleast 8 (10 in this case) line-ins for external preamps. All the DSP/free plug-in shit is just a bonus.

Aw helll no. That is a pretty serious bit of box.

Yeah, things a big leap but I've intended to get a new interface for a long, long time and I figure if I'm gonna step up I might as well get something that's gonna be well, the best it can be within reason. Don't have a ton of outboard so being able to get a lot of that stuff out of the way with the internal preamps, console and outboard emulation stuff seems like a good way to go. Not incredibly down to buy 12 more channels of nice preamps and shit in addition to a dedicated AD/DA converter that would cost in the ballpark of what I'm paying for this interface. Will report back with stuff when I get the unit and get around to some recording.

Our band, Rabbitkeeper, is about to do an EP that we're taking as serious as possible with me also refusing to relinquish control of engineer (ha-ha..) duties, so it's about time to get a bigboy rig.

On another note, it is that time of year that I try to learn how to get good at tuning drums. Got a pretty sweet Ludwig snare a couple weeks ago. It's a thick motherfucker, 14x7 at 20-ply. Real goddamn loud. Weirdly enjoyed the clear Remo Pinstripe I had lying around. Threw an Emperor X on it today that I am not as fond of I think. The Emperor is somehow more "boing"-y despite the coating and general thickness. Pinstripe still had a good bit of overtone but in a higher register and was much quicker in decay and with a moongel got the bright "CRACK!" and not a ton of other sonic information my drummer and I are trying to get. Maybe that hydraulic shit in between the plies is the ticket. Gonna try a clear Powerstroke or Controlled Sound next time and see if that's any better.

Drums are fucking weird. And annoying. And fun.

Yeah, the sauce in between the layers is doing a ton of dampening on a pinstripe.

They do make a coated pinstripe too(i never liked playing slick/uncoated heads on my snares).

If that head makes the sound you want, why not just use it? :idk:

Alternately, check out something like an Evans Dry. I am not a fan of a "no overtone" snare sound personally, but the Dry Evans head will do it pretty hard.

Post subject:  Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here

That head seems pretty close to the mark, just tryna see what works best, I guess. Tryna be a real nerd about this upcoming record and come real hot out the gate in the tone department. Coated Pinstripe might actually be the way to go, I'm just interested in seeing what head will get us the closest. I really loved coated heads but I feel like the sort of high and lowpass effect makes them a little more honky when tuned up really high. Seems like the clear heads have a much more flat response to them that lends well to a hi-fi sort of crack.

Best floor tom sound (with my own drum) I have got thus far, is clear Emperor on the batter and coated Ambassador on the reso. Has a lot of attack and bottom end and the coated bottom head seems to reign in some of those more weird overtones from the bottom head. Kinda makes tuning on a less than ideal tom a little. Still having some hard luck getting a good rack tom sound. That has always been a pain for me.

Evans Dry I have had some luck with on cheaper steel snares to reduce the ring, and would be curious how it would work on this wood boy. That is probably, maybe a little overkill for this snare though. I definitely want some overtone, but would like for it to quickly decay after the initial strike. The room we will be recording in is wildly reverberant so I figure getting tighter tones might be the wise way to go. :idk:

What are you running for a bottom head on the snare?

Also, what for snare strainers?

I’ve got whatever shipped with the snare, it’s still in good condition so I figured I’d leave it for now. It’s a Remo weatherking whatever, so I don’t know if it’s Ambassador or Diplomat thickness. Got the standard 18 strand or whatever.

Do you have any personal preferences/recs?

On the brightside, I think I’m really into the Emperor X now. Spent some more time with it and cranked the shit out of it and that seemed to do the trick. It’s like, super fucking taut and the overtone sustains much shorter. It’s also distinctly far more fat than the Pinstripe and has a very deep character to it while retaining the snap and controlled, Bright overtones I want to hear. It’s probably the best snare sound that has entered our house, very stoked on it.

I am running an ambassador snareside on my 14x6.5 ludwig.

I think i might have put a diplomat on the 14x5 acrolite.

I put one of those 30 strand puresound strainers on the 6.5 and i don't think i have ever been happier with my snare sound on that snare. For me, the perfect combination of snarey buzz and projected body/pop. Sounds awesome light or heavy hit.

I was really surprised at how much i dug that strainer. Wasn't really expecting to think much of it.

I started playing tabletop games with a local group of complete strangers. It racked my nerves but ended up being super dope. It has completely reinvigorated my love of tabletop games. It's also nice to be the player for once and not the DM.

That said, if anyone else is ever down to play or try out tabletop RPGs I am totally down to run a game. I have done it over Discord with a lot of success.

Next step is finding some local musicians. You know, besides Tor ....

Snaxie, it's spectacular to see that you were able to arise from complexities in a revived Version 2.0 (let's rock this like it's 2000) and feel more spectacular than before. I will join in the hugs for group radium hugs.

To everyone in general: I have been feeling reminiscent as of late, in these trying times. I have missed our interactions.

Myself: I found another sink. There are now two sinks side-by-side. That means married. It transpired last Halloween.

Thank you both, kindly. :isay:

It's nice to see the noir has not vanished.

Have either of you any plans for the upcoming holiday? I know it may not be as important as Krampus Day, but a damn fine holiday it is, I dare say.

Post subject:  Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here

my kids (now 12 and 15) are not as much into our favorite holiday as they used to be. The daughter (15) just hangs with friends and my son just goes out with a mask to get candy.

I will admit we have been very lax in decorating and making a big deal about it, which probably has more to do with why they are no longer interested.

with myself working so much (which now seems to include evenings and occasional weekends) and having bands I fear that maybe I have let family things slip.

Its a tough balance. a musician needs to music. I am able to still get to my son's activities (baseball...) but my daughter is in that rough stage where she is not into much except her friends.

guess I got caught in a dark mood.

I can only imagine what it was like for my parents to navigate into and through into the four of us filing into our mid-teens, one right after another. :red:

What a nightmare.

Being a teen once could never prepare you for it. Which, i think, must be part of the trick.

Oh also, Sardo, the noir is now out of necessity. Our original theme broke... So now we are 7 days a week noir.
