Jeeezus, that is so many strings.

Is a beast of this nature massively heavier than a normal string-challenged guitar, or just more along the lines of a normal bass sort of weight?

I think i am going the other way. Keep on going shorter and shorter scale. Really want a 7/8 or 22" something or other lately. Because i really need another guitar. :red:

Honestly, its really light weight. Same ish as a regular 6 string with a floyd - or my Yamaha sa504tvl with a american bigsby. Balance is a bit weird, like when you adjust the neck angle it has a bit more momentum, but it sits on my body fine.

The 27" scale is glorious though. It has really light strings on it - i think 9's or 10's, and theyre really tight - not quite as tight as my regular 24.75" guitar with 11's on it, but getting close. Some frets are a bit of a reach, but not too bad. The lowest string rattles a bunch, but I think thats because my picking hand is shitty from 4 years of disuse. The action is great. The whole thing is way easier to play than i thought. The hard part is wrapping my head around the theory.

TLDR: Its great, strings are almost tight enough, scale is not much of an adjustment, doesn't weigh as much as it looks.

Nice!

I am also a big fan of long scale necks. My main tele is a bit over 26" and I love it.

I moved to place where I can finally have room to play music again, so that will be exciting:

After 6 years we finally left Manhattan and shipped out to Queens, specifically Astoria. Have a list of ~12 songs I want to work through so once I am excited to crack into those after we finish moving in.

OOOH! Nice Dev! Actually looks like a pretty big space!

Whereabouts in Astoria?

My sister and her husband live right around where steinway and astoria boulevard cross.

That looks like a seriously proper place to do some rocking, Dev. Bet you could get some real cool drums in there. What kinda tunes are you cooking up?

Hope you and Barb are doing well, man. :huzzah:

I am off 24th. Ave right next to the park. Your sister is probably less than a mile from me then.

I know myself so drums are out of the question, but hey that is what my drum machine is for. The tunes are a collection of things I wrote for the oh whales I want to de-pop-punkify, some stuff I wrote while in the oh whales, and then some more current stuff. Going back to my roots a bit so probably gonna end up pretty emo with my brand of noisy guitar.

Not entirely sure where it will all end up. I am hoping to put together the rough draft then I may start recruiting folks to play parts better than I could. Especially for things like drums.

I have all the basic progressions and together and ironing out lyrics which is a real weak spot for me. But hopefully I can put together some demos for critique soon.

Excellent. I used to live on 21st st, you are kinda right in the middle between where i was and where my sis is now. Near the bohemian beer hall too, which is swell! (At least when pandemics aren't fussing about.)

Finally got this thing all together a couple weeks ago. For my purposes it is pretty much perfect.

oh fuck yes. that looks total fantastic.

remind me what the build was? warmoth body, jazz neck?

Warmoth one piece swamp ash body, ended up getting nitrocellulose. Buddy who restores old wooden boats for old rich fuckers did the finish for me. And yup, mexican fender jazz neck I've had forever that was attached to a Kramer striker body that got replaced by this new body. Got Lollar's P90 split coil hybrid sucker in there, volume and tone knobs with a two way switch that pulls the pots out of the circuit and it's just pickup straight to the jack. Kind of ridiculous and aggro sound.

Here is the bass through some amp sim bizness, plugin RAT and plugin SVT: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g665b2kxxge5v ... X.mp3?dl=0

I really love it though, jazz neck is more ideal for my little hands and obnoxious guitar-on-bass sort of playing style.

That mix sounds soooo good.

Thank you, brother. :huzzah:

Got the bass all reamped at a "real" studio and stuff now, put a ton of mics up and took all the stems home and unsurprisingly ended up just using one microphone and the stereo room mic. :idk: Beyer M160 ended up beating out some more typical and obvious choices (RE20, D112, Fet47) but I find that's how it goes more often than not with my favorite sounds. Oh, also fed the bass through an old Vibro Champ with an OCD in front for some of the parts where the bass really needs to feel like a guitar and I'd say that's now my favorite trick.

Little video recorded live set our band did: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ytk4c4245e4c7 ... 1.mp4?dl=0

We're tryna get a little momentum going before shows and shit start up again and so we're not dropping an album without any kind of primer.

Chris, rumor has it the beer garden opens tomorrow.

Finally decided to give in and get into the 500 series audio shit a couple weeks ago and grabbed an 8-slot lunch box and a couple of the Neve-alike preamps Hairball makes. I've kinda got to a point where I do think that preamp tone chaser stuff is mostly exaggerated snake oil shit. And while I do still believe that, I've gotta say these things sound really really fucking good. :red:

My ears couldn’t really tell you one way or the other but I find there is usually a threshold for money:sound quality, once you surpass that it really comes down to features/taste/construction.

My hearing sucks though so ultimately I am a horrible judge.

I think you're not alone in the "couldn't tell one way or the other" camp, I don't think I could outside of an immediate A/B test and even then. That kind of stuff is negligible I think at the end of the day. I've known bands who spent a ton of money at a really nice studio with world class gear who came out with a pretty awful sounding record and the exact inverse as well. Shit's mostly just toys.

But toys can be fun. :red:

I feel personally attacked.
