Dude has a Ludwig endorsement (among others) from playing classic rock covers down south. "The Mad Drummer". Credit where it's due.

Yeah he is a big deal evidently.

I really have nothing negative to say about him, except for that he plays with those guys,

It pays the bills, and he gets free shit out of it. I can't begrudge the guy. He takes a competent Plain Jane cover band and puts them over-the-top. What they're playing and the venues they're performing at is so outside of my experience I wouldn't even know where to find something like that. I get the classic rock cover thing; that's just suburban bar stuff. But the rest, the venues and whatnot, it's like Praise And Worship-rock and Megachurches. I'm like, "seriously? where does this even exist? We don't have this here." We have a couple casinos where they have the sort of acts that do State Fairs and tribute bands and old-timers and whatnot, but that's pretty much it.

I suppose it's a very middle-America thing?

Re: Jesus Rock, another digression, we really don't have that here, as much as the greater Buffalo area can be pretty musically backwards, the religious folks are very ethnic-Catholic so at least we don't get that. The suburban/outlying areas scene is classic rock covers with some metal and punk for the angry young white people and the cityfolk are mostly indie and -core with a smattering of electronicstuff.

See, I see those types of venues everywhere around here.

In fact, I was even in one of those bands. I worked for a christian summer camp, and we had a band that covered contemporary christian worships songs (I played bass). We played for the camp, some local churches and one big ass church. We have a non-denominational place in town that is huuuuuuuge and has similar bands.

But for just pure classic rock covers, these guys play events. Their agent is in contact with lots of big event planners I imagine, and anytime you need a band to play family friendly tunes in the background he probably drops their name. They are also popular for big conventions and stuff. My (former) church has an annual event that hires such bands. One of them also played covers at Margaritaville (the restaurant in town owned by that guy that I unfortunately worked for) for like obscene amounts of money. Like a few hundred a night, with nightly gigs. As a band they probably made over $1000 a week for like, 3 or four hour sets. Almost the exact same set every night.

It is not the path I wish to carve, but to is most definitely not a bad gig. Just be prepared to play for audiences that are not paying any attention to you at all.

EDIT: Asked a friend, and found out they got paid $500 for weekend nights and $300 for weekdays, every day in the summer. So $2500 a week playing classic covers.

I'm in Snaxie's camp; I've also never seen one of those types of venues.

That man is incredible. He should really be in a band making original music. It's just so Spinal Tap.

It seems that the Christian Rock/megachurch stuff goes together and yet never seems to cross paths with the rest of the musicians. I did get a gig as a hired gun for a christian rock thing. It was really bizarre. I did it for about a year or so. Really odd part was the audience fans wasn't so much interested in the music I think but more the lyrics. Somehow they manage to get a lot of people to these shows which are held in these Odd churches etc. Matter of fact one of the shows I played was this huge 3 day festival thing with 12 stages and over 25,000 people. (The project I was in was not on the main stage) Strangest thing is to have these people get all freaky "laying hands" on each other and weird shit. We did another show with a "regular" musician who was not expecting things to go like that on stage and he got a little freaked out and asked what the fuck are these people doing? It's just a really different atmosphere.

I always forgot I'm like, the only one who lives in the south east besides Clint (THEE HAMMER).

All of this is so normal to me, it is hilarious imagining it from someone unfamiliar with it.

The "laying on of hands" or really, more of an outreach of hands, would scare the fuck out of me if I had not seen it before. Did the singer think he was becoming the new :hitler: ?

Not at all, the singer (was a chick) and she was the Christian, I was, of course just a satanic heathen, but she had been to a lot of christian shows etc. so she knew what was coming, the other guitarist had a look on his face like, OMG WTF???? He never played another show with us.

Hahahahha.

It is slightly Third Reichy though isn't it. My (former) church started to go "contemporary" with a modern praise band at the evening mass. Beside being, just awful, they started to get people into the whole praise hands thing. It's weird.

I grew up in a hippie church. Praise bands, the laying on of hands, etc. Speaking in tongues? Holy shit.

Even being that familiar with it, the shit still creeps me the fuck out.

I used to wonder what would happen if i started freaking out, all "DON'T YOU FUCKING TOUCH ME!" and shit. They probably would have beaten me to death trying to loosen up the demons.
